Vandaag is het Koningsdag, de verjaardag van koning Willem-Alexander. Sinds 2014 wordt Koningsdag gevierd nadat koningin Beatrix op 30 april 2013 troonsafstand deed. Die dag was dus vooralsnog de allerlaatste Koninginnedag. Op de foto een Nederlandse uitgave van de munt van 1 euro, en heel toepasselijk is de ondergrond oranje. Opdracht was ‘Oranje’. Wanneer je denkt aan Nederland dan is de kleur oranje nooit ver weg. Denk aan (inter)nationale sportevenementen waarbij Nederlanders vaak in het oranje zijn uitgedost. En hoe gek het ook klinkt, ook de oranje kleur van de wortels die jij eet kent een Nederlandse geschiedenis. Beide verschijnselen gaan terug tot in de 80-jarige oorlog tussen de Lage Landen en het Spaans-Habsburgse rijk. Heden ten dage is Nederland onderdeel van het Koninkrijk der Nederlanden met aan het hoofd een koning: deze koning is afstammeling (niet in een rechte lijn) van Willem van Oranje-Nassau, de eerste prins die de opstand van de Lage Landen leidde. Latere Oranjes waren stadhouder (tot aan 1795) of koning (1813-heden). En voor degenen die tegen een monarchie zijn: er is ook een kleine republikeinse beweging in Nederland. Op de foto euromunten met de beeltenis van Beatrix (1980-2013) en Willem-Alexander (2013-heden). Deze ‘oranje’ munten worden in de gehele eurozone gebruikt. De achterste munt is uitgegeven in het kader van 200 jaar koninkrijk. – – – Challenge was 'Orange'. If you think about The Netherlands then is the colour orange never far away. Think about (inter)national sports events: many Dutch are easy recognisable because of their orange clothes. And how strange it may sound: also the orange colour of the carrots you eat has something to do with the history of The Netherlands. Both phenomenons go back as far as the 80 Years War between the Low Countries and the Spanish-Habsburgian Empire. These days The Netherlands is part of the Kingdom of The Netherlands with at its head a king. This king is descendant (although not in a straight line) of William of Orange-Nassau, the first prince who led the revolt of the Low Countries. Later ‘Oranges’ were stadtholder (1588-1795) or king (1813-now). And for those who oppose a monarchy: there is also a small republican movement in The Netherlands. The coin furthest away has been issued to commemorate 200 years of kingdom and depicts all kings since 1813.
