If these logs seem out of place lying on the surface of a barren desert to you, it is because they came from a conifer forest that grew 220 million years ago. The petrified wood remains were exposed by erosion on their long journey through time. This photo was taken by a Hasselblad 500C medium format film camera with a Carl Zeiss Distagon 1:4 f=50mm lens and Zenza Bronica SL39•3C(UV) filter using Kodak Portra 160 film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

Conifer trees that grew over 200 million years ago have been exposed by erosion. The petrified remains are now stone, the original wood having been mineralized ages ago.
