Beginning on September 16, 1810, the people of Mexico fought a long war of independence from Spain, finally achieving victory with the entrance of the Army of the Three Guarantees led by Augustín de Iturbide to Mexico City on September 27, 1821. Spain under the rule of Isabella II finally recognized the independence of Mexico in 1836.

As seen from the Obelisco a los Niños Heroes y al Honor Militar, the Castillo de Chapultepec overlooks a forested urban park within Mexico City. Besides being a green zone for "metropolitan relief", it is an historic area full of museums and historic monuments.
