Much as a canary warns miners of imminent danger, roses warn vintage wine grape growers. Those roses are an early warning signal to the farmers since they are affected by the same plant diseases and pests as the vines. They are beautiful to look at, as well!

Today's lesson is about Christopher Columbus. He discovered America in 1492 and read a proclamation giving the New World to King Ferdinand of Spain. This impressed the local people so much that they now celebrate the second Monday of October as Columbus Day
