Batak Toba Sumatra Village

The Christian Batak culture of Lake Toba is strikingly different from the rest of the island. Stone furniture next to the steep roofs of ornate houses are characteristic of the architectural style of these people. Their houses are raised with the lowest level used as a pen for their animals.

To the distress of my sister, I maintained a collection of exotic pets as a child. Even as a young adult I found this millipede irresistible, naming him Leggy and training him to walk the circus tightrope.

Lake Toba Sumatra Indonesia

Lake Toba is a relatively difficult overland journey but worth the hardship. It is an equatorial volcanic highland crater lake with an enormous central island, Samosir. The tropical climate is moderated by the altitude and the terrain is rugged and beautiful.
This ideal location was a significant stop on the route taken by adventurous overland trekkers as they made their way towards Thailand and India with Europe as the ultimate destination (or in reverse to Australia). The beauty and tranquility of this location warranted at least a week or ten days for rest and rejuvenation before continuing on the trail.

At the edge of Lake Toba is the town of Parapat. The pictured transit center has a fascinating assortment of animal drawn vehicles, bicycles and even an occasional car. There is a ferry to the large island of Samosir in the center of the lake frequented by an international overland traveler community.

Toba Samosir Island Field

Orderly and well tended rice paddies fill the valley beneath the towering cliffs of Lake Toba's central island, Samosir. Abundant rain feeds waterfalls cascading from the cliffs above and is channeled into the paddies.
