From the Million Dollar Highway (U.S.550) just below Red Mountain Pass (11,018 ft/3,358 m) is an impressive view of Chicago Peak which is within the San Juan National Forest just northeast of Telluride. The road ahead passes through an old silver mining region and the remains of the Idarado Mine before plunging precipitously down the Uncompahgre Gorge towards Ouray.

Engineer Mountain (a.k.a. Ice Cream Cone Mt. by many children) is a beautiful landmark when driving up to the summit of Coal Bank Pass on U.S. Highway 550 north of Durango, Colorado.

Perins Peak

From a distance, Perins Peak is visible through the woodlands of Overend Mountain Park at the edge of the small town of Durango. This forested area was my playground as a small child during the late 1950s where I developed a life-long love for unspoiled nature. In my child's mind I thought that the peak was called "Parents Peak", and that it was a place for grownups to get away from their nagging children.

As a child I traveled this road with my parents long ago. From our car my sister exclaimed, "Look!! It's Ice Cream Cone Mountain".
Although maps identify the mountain by a different name, it will always be Ice Cream Cone Mountain to me.

As the late afternoon sun touched the horizon at dusk I came upon Chimney Rock near the tiny settlement of Towaoc on the edge of the Navajo Nation. With only seconds of light left before twilight commenced I quickly propped the camera on a fence post and took my last photo of the day.
