The Fence that Wasn't

11 Sep 2015 8 4 681
The sign says, "Do Not Go Beyond This Point". Sage advise I would say . . . Fence? It may be invisible, but it is indeed there! This photo was taken from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC rangefinder film camera with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens, the Kodak 135 transparency scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and digitally restore using Photoshop.

A image set in stone - not for the faint of heart . . . This photo was taken from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop. From the archives - May, 1975

Tea Time

30 Nov 2014 2 1 487
A good cup of tea begins far from your kitchen. Milk, Sugar? How many lumps? This photo comes from a Kodak 135 transparency shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC camera, scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and digitally restored with Photoshop.

Root Cause

19 Nov 2014 1 1 613
Indeed, the root cause of the slow deterioration of the Mayan temple cities within the tropical selva of Petén was the very forest that grows there. This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and restored using Photoshop.

Full Moon Solstice Celebration

09 Nov 2013 1 603
For a week there was a conspiracy brewing. A small group of young foreign adventure travelers camping at the entrance of Tikal, myself included, planned to enter the ruined Mayan temple city and pass the night in the Grand Plaza pyramids to observe the solstice during the full moon. Propping my camera on a stela and opening up the aperture to maximum, I set the 10-second shutter-release timer to record the moment. The full moon was so overwhelmingly bright that that the exposure was seamless. Note: Although entering the ruins was technically forbidden at that hour we were very respectful and did no harm. I recommend viewing large to bear witness to our celebration. This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Disintegrate

People, Cities, Cultures . . . . It will eventually happen to all . . . This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Acropolis

07 Nov 2013 3 661
Dawn greets the restored Acropolis of Tikal. As light breaks, a symphony of bird calls crescendo from the dense tropical forest from which this long abandoned Mayan site has been reclaimed. This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Overgrown

06 Nov 2013 457
Away from the excavated and restored parts of this Maya Temple complex are vast areas of the abandoned city, reclaimed many centuries ago by the tropical forests of Petén, Guatemala. This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Edzna Temple

05 Nov 2013 3 4 612
From the heights of the pyramid of Edzna is an overlook of it's Mayan ball court. There were no goals scored on this afternoon in a match which by all accounts was a to-the-death struggle . . . This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Edzna Pyramid Steps

05 Nov 2013 1 536
The five story staircase leading up the main pyramid of the Edzna Mayan temple complex has been half-restored. According to archaeologists this site was occupied by 600BC and like many Mayan sites, it's decline and abandonment remain a mystery. This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Edzna

05 Nov 2013 1 577
The Mayan temple site of Edzna, located outside of Campeche, México, is somewhat off the main tourist circuit. This is how the partially restored pyramid looked in May,1975. This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Forest Adventure

04 Nov 2013 4 2 558
In one of my first "Narrated Tour" jobs I showed a small group from Mexico City around the rainforest on the banks of Agua Azul, where I had been camping for several weeks. My 'pay' was an additional week of food supplies and 1/4 bottle of tequila (for medicinal purposes). This photo was shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC with a COLOR-YASHINON DX 1:1.8 f=35mm lens using Kodak color slide film and scanned by an Epson Perfection V600.

Chichén Itzá Chac-Mool

18 Aug 2013 3 466
A classic, often photographed view, through the pillars onto a Chac-Mool sacrificial altar. This image, shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC, is from a 35mm Kodak slide and was scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050, digitalized with Photoshop.

Ball Court Wall

18 Aug 2013 8 5 431
Decorating the walls of the Ball Court in the Yucatan Mayan ruins of Chichén Itzá are reliefs depicting the sport spectacle played here centuries ago. The games were apparently quite bloody. This image, shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC, is from a 35mm Kodak slide and was scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050, digitalized with Photoshop.

Geometric Design

18 Aug 2013 2 2 504
Geometric designs incorporated within the walls without mortar have held up well over the centuries. This image, shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC, is from a 35mm Kodak slide and was scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050, digitalized with Photoshop.

Foundation Pillars

18 Aug 2013 2 521
The figure-pillars holding up the floor of this building are very impressive. This image, shot from a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC, is from a 35mm Kodak slide and was scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050, digitalized with Photoshop.

Blue River

27 Jun 2013 323
On an adventure in México long ago I sought relief from the oppressive tepid tropical heat smothering lowland Chiapas. "Head for Agua Azul", I was told. This is the view from a hammock that I strung in a tiny embankment next to the river. I camped here for 3 weeks. This image came from an old Kodak transparency shot by a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC, scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

Cascada Azul

27 Jun 2013 315
In the mid 1970s Agua Azul attracted a small community of overland travelers from around the world. Small embankments next to the river served as campsites. This image is near to where I strung my hamaca for 3 weeks. Thirty minutes walk away was a tiny Mayan settlement where one could buy rice, beans, chiles and tortillas. This image came from an old Kodak transparency shot by a Yashica ELECTRO 35CC, scanned by an HP Scanjet G4050 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.
