Sint Nicolaaskerk (St. Nicholas inside The Walls)…

This Baroque styled church was consecrated on February 7th,1887, after over 200 years of repression of the Catholic religion which began in 1578 had forced worship into underground locations. The Catholic Emancipation which began in 1795 restored permission for the building of and use of Catholic churches in Amsterdam, but due to continued oppression from the Dutch Protestant community, it was not until the latter part of the 19th century the Catholic faith once again began to hold any power and this church was designed and built .

De Waag (Weigh House), Amsterdam, The Netherlands

This was formerly St. Anthony's Gate, the only surviving medieval fortified gate built in the 1480's and becoming part of the city wall. It was converted to a weigh house for various foodstuffs and anchors in 1617, the upper floor being used by guilds, amongst them the Surgeons Guild. Rembrandt was a frequent guest at the lectures on anatomy and used these as inspiration for his paintings 'Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Nicolaes Tulp' and 'Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Joan Deijman'. It was the use of the surgeons which prevented the building being demolished, and later in 1819 it became a fire station, as well as archive storage and at times museums. It is now a cafe.

Not the original, but couldn't resist taking the pic. Wasn't until after I had taken the pic that I realised I had also photographed one of the famed girls in the window unintentionally...such an interesting part of Amsterdam with a unique culture all of its own.

Hotel Ibis and office block in background, this bicycle park still cannot manage to accomodate all the bicycles in Amsterdam...they are everywhere, even chained to traffic signals in the center of major intersections!! Sure would not want to park my bike in this parking garage and forget where I put it...would take days of looking to find it!!
