Germany - Oberstdorf, Seelenkapelle

19 Mar 2025 41 48 142
The Seelenkapelle (Chapel of the Souls) is one of the few buildings in the center of Oberstdirf, which did not fall victim to the Great Fire of 1865. The chapel is located on the west side of the parish church - in the middle of the old abandoned cemetery - and has been used as a war memorial chapel since 1931. The entrance is therefore guarded by two martial soldiers. The chapel was probably built in the late 15th century. An "eternal light" was donated to it in 1504. In 1524 it was mentioned as an ossuary. The amazing paintings with the sculptures in the niches on the north wall were created in the middle of the 16th century. The impressive Pietà in the interior is dating back to the early 40s of the 20th century. The Seelenkapelle is of huge significance to the fallen soldiers from the war and is also considered as a memorial. The chapel is the second oldest of the Oberstdorf chapels.

Germany - Kevelaer, Gnadenkapelle

10 Jan 2025 45 41 311
Kevelaer is one of the most famous and largest Marian pilgrimage sites in Germany. Probably the most important date for the history of the city is June 1, 1642. Just before Christmas 1641, at the crossroads of the old trade routes Amsterdam-Cologne and Münster-Brussels, the Geldrian merchant Hendrick Busman heard three times the mysterious cry: "On this spot you shall build me a little chapel".Triggered by these events, he made the decision to heed the call and to built a shrine on that location. The chapel was consecrated and on 1 June 1642, the Sunday after Assumption of Mary, the print was displayed in it, and the chapel became such a popular destination for pilgrims that a church was built for them between 1643 and 1645. The little chapel was replaced in 1654 with a larger one, the current Gnadenkapelle (Chapel of Mercy or Chapel of Grace), which still houses the miraculous image “Consolatrix Afflictorum”. The hexagonal domed building is one of the most visited Catholic pilgrimage sites in north-western Europe and has drawn pilgrims to Kevealer from all over the world for more than 360 years.

Greece - Feneos, Saint Fanourios Chapel

28 Aug 2024 40 36 296
The picturesque chapel of Saint Fanourios ( Εξωκλήσι Αγίου Φανουρίου ) is situated on a small peninsula of Lake Doxa , jutting out into the center of the lake. The chapel was originally the church of the first monastery built in the Feneos plain in the 13th century, dedicated to Saint George. At the end of the 17th century flooding of the rivers Doxa and Olvios forced the monks to abandon the original momastery and to build a new one at a higher location. However, the original chapel of the old monastery remained intact over the centuries and was rededicated in 1991 to Saint Fanourios to prevent it from falling into disuse. (Next to the chapel one can see some remains of the old monastery: PiP3). Architecturally, the Saint Fanourios Chapel does not display any particular interest, but in combination with the natural beauty reflected in the waters of the lake, it creates a unique and idyllic image. Over the past three decades, it has become the landmark of the area.

Nederland - Maastricht, Sint-Servaasbasiliek

03 Jan 2024 38 39 386
The Romanesque Sint-Servaasbasiliek (Basilica of Saint Servatius) is built on Saint Servatius - an Armenian missionary who died in Maasticht in the year of 384 -gravesite. It is likely that the current building is the 4th iteration of churches on this site. The first church was a small memorial chapel, which was replaced by a larger church. Next, a pilgrim church was built. Finally, the current church was built between the 11th and 12th centuries. The Sint-Servaasbasiliek is considered being the oldest still standing church in the Netherlands. The large, triple-nave transept basilica was built largely in Romanesque style, using millstone grit and marl. The church building serves as a parish church of the Roman Catholic St. Servatius parish and deanery church of Maastricht. Since 1985, the church has held the title of minor basilica. The church, the cloisters, and the treasure room are open to the public and can be visited.

The Sint-Servaaskapel (Saint Servatius Chapel) is a pigrimage chapel. The cahpel is dedicated to Saint Servatius and is located on a ‘hill’ (the Servaasberg) on the edge of the Leudal. A Servaas chapel at this site was first mentioned in 1744, when it was shown on a map. The chapel was restored in 1877, but the current, neo-Gothic chapel was built in 1891. The chapel was consecrated in 1892. The latest restoration took place in 1994. Behind the chapel is the Saint Servatius well that is said to have been dug by the saint himself in order to use the well, which is 15 meters above the level of the stream, to baptize the first local Christians.

Nederland - Egmond aan den Hoef, Slotkapel

13 May 2022 62 54 605
The first Slotkapel (Castle Chapel) - dedicated to Saint Catherine, the patron of the nobility, was built in 1229, commissioned by Willem I van Egmont. It was located next to the castle of Egmond. In 1430 Count Jan van Egmond ordered the demolition and rebuilding of the chapel in its current simple Gothic style as a one-aisled church. The chapel and castle were destroyed in 1573 in the Eighty Years War, during the siege of the city of Alkmaar. In 1633 the chapel was restored by the States of Holland and West Frisia. Various cities, aristocrats and companies from that time made donations for the restoration, including the fantastic stained-glass windows. The unique clock in the centuries-old tower was made in 1682 by Christiaan Huygens. In 1960 the Slotkapel was in a very poor condition and the municipality intended the demolition of the church. Due to the efforts of a group of citizens the chapel was restored and does still exist. Nowadays it serves as a venue for weddings, exhibitions and concerts.

Nederland - Bronkhorst, Bronkhorsterkapel

23 Mar 2022 40 32 643
Bronkhorst - one of the smallest cities in the Netherlands - has a very old church, popularly called Bronkhorsterkapel . The chapel is mentioned for the first time in a document in the year of 1344. The chapel was founded by "Gijsbrecht V van Bronckhorst" and his wife. The document even mentioned a "newly founded chapel", which shows that the chapel seems to have had a predecessor. The pastor of nearby Steenderen gave permission in 1360 to build a larger chapel on condition that the rights of the parish church would be maintained. In 1633 a town fire raged in Bronkhorst, which also damaged the chapel. In the 18th century, the church fell into disrepair. Religious services were no longer held and it was even used as a warehouse for a while. In 1843, the building was converted into a school. In 1954, the Reverend "A.M. Nortier" pleaded for the chapel to be used for religious services again and funds were made available for its restoration. This restoration was carried out in 1960 and the following years, based on an old drawing from 1742. The Bronkhorsterkapel - a brick hall church in Gothic style - is a monument of great cultural and historical significance in the Netherlands and was designated a national monument in 1966. In 2011, the chapel was transferred to the Stichting Oude Gelderse Kerken (a foundation dedicated to the preservation of old monumental churches in the province of Gelderland). The chapel is no longer used for regular church services, but serves as a unique wedding location. In addition, exhibitions and small-scale music performances take place.

Nederland - Thorn, Kapel onder de Linden

The Kapel onder de Linden (officially the Kapel van O.L.Vrouw van Loreto onder de Linden ) was built in 1673, commissioned by Canon Elisabeth of Manderscheidt-Blanckenheim from the Thorn Abbey . The chapel is a copy of the holy house in Nazareth, which, according to legend, was brought to the Italian town of Loreto by angels during a church persecution. The construction was supervised by master Willem Boyens, city architect of Roermond. In 1811, the chapel was extended westward with a higher section, while the confessional hall was added in 1898. In the interior of the chapel, the baroque stucco decorations from the end of the 17th century, the altar with the beautifully carved oak fence in baroque style and the painted medallions are particularly important. During the French occupation, the chapel was closed for several years. In 1797, the occupying forces decided that all church property would belong to the French state. When the French banned the church and the Catholic religion, the chapel had to be closed. In 1801 it could be used again for Catholic worship. Since its foundation, the chapel has always attracted many devotees of Mary. Processions from the surrounding villages to the chapel are still held to this day. The Kapel onder de Linden is open for visitors.

In 1050 a Romanesque burial chapel of the founder, Count Anselm von Calw was erected. A Gothic successor building burned down in 1644. The baroque chapel, which has been preserved until today, was built in 1680 and consecrated in 1685. It still has a Romanesque crypt from the early 12th century. The chapel is accessible from the village of Wurmlingen along a Way of the Cross, which overcomes a height difference of 130 meters. Nederland - Assel, Heilige Geest Kapel

06 Apr 2020 82 54 1158
Assel is a small hamlet with just more than ten houses. It also has a natural cemetery with a little chapel: Heilige Geest Kapel (Holy Ghost Chapel). This chapel was built in 1940 for the Catholics of Radio Kootwijk, because there was no church for them in the vicinity. The inhabitants raised money themselves and thus the church could be built on a piece of land that was donated. The rectangular brick chapel was built after a design by architect Jan van Dongen Jr., who was also the master builder of two other catholic churches in Apeldoorn. The chapel is part of the Westerwolde estate, which was founded by the Amsterdam lawyer W.J.M. Westerwoudt. The chapel is surrounded by hundreds of graves of the first natural cemetery of the Netherlands. Since 1955 the cemetery is open for not-relatives of the owners. The walled family cemetery (PiP 2) - on the tower side of the chapel - is separate from the natural cemetery. Five members of the Westerwoudt family are buried there. Nowadays every Sunday the Heilige Geest Kapel is till used for services for believers from the area and for people who have buried their families and acquaintances here. The chapel is also rented out for funeral services, weddings and even concerts.

England - Warwick, Beauchamp Chantry.

07 Mar 2017 91 68 2753
The Beauchamp Chapel is considered being the finest medieval chapel in England. The chapel, situated at the south-east of the Collegiate Church of St. Mary, was built at the behest of Richard de Beauchamp (1382–1439), 13th Earl of Warwick, a nobleman and military commander. Richard de Beauchamp's will was made in 1437 and two years later he died. Most of his property was entailed, but with a portion of the rest the will established a substantial trust. The trust endowed the St Mary’s Church and called for the construction of a new chapel there. Construction started shortly after his death with the foundation stone being laid in 1443; the chapel was completed in 1462. In 1475 the body of De Beauchamp was transferred to this family mausoleum. The Beauchamp Chantry is composed of three bays, at the centre of which is the tomb of Richard de Beauchamp with its gilt-bronze monumental effigy. Beside the tomb of Earl Richard is that of Ambrose Dudley, whose effigy wears a gilded iron coronet (PiP). But the grandest tomb of is that of Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester and his wife Lettice. His tomb is set into the north wall of the chapel, beneath a gilded canopy.

Nederland - Amsterdam, Begijnhofkapel

27 Feb 2016 30 22 1802
The beguines had as early as 1397 their own little chapel in the Begijnhof. After the enlargement of the beguinage a new larger chapel was consecrated. The beguines themselves paid for the restoration of their church after it was damaged during fires in 1421 and 1452. After the ‘Alteration’ (transition of the municipality to the Protestant church) of 1578 their Gothic church was confiscated for Protestant use. The English Reformed Church of Amsterdam still has its services at this location. The Beguines went without a church for a century, worshipping in their homes in the Begijnhof. In 1671 began construction of their own Catholic chapel in two of their houses, which was authorized by the Protestant authorities, but its exterior had to be hidden from public view. So it became a ‘hidden church’. It opened for its first service in 1682. The interior of the Begijnhofkapel still offers fine marble columns, wooden pews, stained-glass windows and paintings telling the story of the ‘Miracle of Amsterdam’, referring to a eucharistic miracle in 1345, which happened in the Kalverstraat, not far from the Begijnhof.
