The most important site in Tarragona is the Roman amphitheatre, which was built at the turn of the 2nd century AD. It is located just outside the city walls and on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. The Amphitheatre was part of the Roman city of Tarraco, the remains of which nowadays are a UNESCO World Heritage site. The elliptical (open air) structure measured 130 x 102 metres and could house around 14.000 spectators, which came to see gladiator combats, wild animal hunts and public executions. The amphitheatre was used until the 4th AD. Later there were churches built on the site. The remains of the medieval church of Santa María del Miracle can still be seen today in the former arena.
