Greece - Charavgi, Polylimnio Waterfalls

22 Jul 2024 44 40 276
The Polylimnio Waterfalls are a collection of 15 cascading waterfalls and azure and turquoise little lakes located in the heart of Peloponnese. The waterfalls are formed by the flow of the Kadis River. The name of this waterfall complex comes from the word (poly=many, limnio=lake), which together means “many lakes”. Each of the lakes has its own name: for instance Mavrolimna , meaning “black lake”, Tou Italou , which means “of the Italian” and Stathula , which is a girl’s name. The biggest lake is “Kadi Lake”, which has the biggest waterfalls that reach a height of 25 meters. We were really surprised by the gorge with the waterfalls and little lakes, which looks like a paradise on earth. It was one of the hidden gems during our holiday on the Peloponnese. Polylimnio means “many lakes” and this is exactly what we discovered. We walked along a path with rocks, tree roots and metal aiding handles. It was tough and tiring - especially with the high temperatures - but totally worth it.

Germany - Rettenberg, Geratser Wasserfall

The Geratser Wasserfall is a striking waterfall in the Kranzegger Bach . It is located south of Kempten and north of Sonthofen in the municipality of Rettenberg. The Kranzegger Bach flows through a green meadow landscape before dropping six meters from a wall in a small wooded area. The waterfall got its name from the hamlet of Gerats, where it is located. As the waterfall is so hidden in the forest and at the same time a few kilometers away from well known villages, this natural wonder does not attract many visitors.

Greece - Edessa, waterfalls

The Edessa waterfalls - Greece’s largest waterfalls - are quite exceptional. Centuries ago people made a bassin for their water supply, but in the 14th century the river changed it course ((perhaps after a geologic or weather phenomenon) creating first one waterfall but later on several other small waterfalls. The most impressive waterfall - called Karanos - has a height of 70 meters. The smaller twinfall is called Lamda. It is possible to walk behind the big Karanos waterfall where one has a perfect view with a water curtain (PiP 4).

Switzerland - Schaffhausen, Rhine Falls

The Rhine Falls is one of the most impressive and powerful waterfalls in Europe. The falls have a width of 150 meters and are ‘just’ 23 meters high. The capacity of flow is in summer about 600.000 liters per second and in winter about 250.000 liters. The Rhine Falls were formed 15.000 years ago - in the last ice age - by erosion-resistant rocks narrowing the riverbed, forcing the Rhine River into a new riverbed. The Rhine Falls Rock ( Rheinfall Felsen ) - a mighty rock in the midst of the falls - offers one of the most spectacular views. This rock can be reached by boat.

Argentina - Iguazú Falls

The Iguazú Falls are waterfalls of the Iguazú River on the border of Argentina and Brazil. They are the largest waterfalls system in the world. The Iguazú River rises near the Brazilian city of Curitiba. For most of its course, the river flows through Brazil; however, most of the falls are on the Argentine side. The Iguazú Falls are located where the river tumbles over the edge of the Paraná Plateau. The edge has a length of 2,7 kilometers and numerous islands divide the falls into many separate waterfalls and cataracts, varying between 60 to 82 meters high. The number of these smaller waterfalls fluctuates from 150 to 300, depending on the water level. Approximately half of the river's flow falls into a long and narrow chasm, called the Devil's Throat (PiP 1).

Waterfall of Loenen, one of the highest of the Netherlands. This waterfall in the so called ‘Vrijenbergspreng’ has a fall of 10 metres (in two steps). As a matter of fact there is a second waterfall downstream with four steps and about 15 metres high.
