My first Prairie Crocus of the year

27 Mar 2008 133
My first, and the only one I could find this afternoon, so I had no choice as far as a photogenic bloom was concerned. Last spring, I didn't see my first Prairie Crocus until 29th March. They are such beautiful flowers - love the silvery hairs. "Legend tells of the Great Spirit giving this delicate plant a fur coat to keep it warm through cold spring nights." From the excellent book, "Plants of Alberta," by France Royer and Richard Dickinson.

Tall Buttercup

"If you truly love Nature, you will find beauty everywhere." Vincent Van Gogh. This pretty Tall Buttercup is an introduced plant from Europe. This species grows from June to September.

Western Clematis

This plant climbs on bushes and trees for support. It belongs to the Crowfoot or Buttercup family. For some strange reason, I can never get a really sharp photo of the flowers :) It was seen at the Erlton/Roxborough Natural Area. A naturalist states that "This is the richest botanical area in the city, with over 380 species on about 3 hectares of land. However, 80 non-native species are now dominating the area."
