Tiny pinwheel of the forest

04 Feb 2011 149
Looks almost like a miniature fan to keep those tiny forest folk cool on a hot summer's day : ) This mini mushroom was already beginning to wilt, its little cap drooping under the weight, towards the end of the fungi season at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park, so I was very happy to find it. And now, back to dealing with lots of legal stuff, paper signing, going through all belongings - and all done long distance, via computer : )

Wilting in the heat

The temperature got up to 34C yesterday, which is way too hot for my liking. I was out on a walk at Beaverdam Flats all yesterday morning, but then enjoyed the luxury of air-conditioning when I did an afternoon volunteer shift. Not sure what the temperature is today - up around 31C, I believe. Was on a walk in the Sikome Lake area of Fish Creek Park all this morning and then drove to the Inglewood Bird Sanctuary for the afternoon. The fall colour reflections in the lagoon there can be spectacular, but not much colour to be seen today. Was happy to see a Great Horned Owl there, across the lagoon from the old house. Had a beautiful Mule Deer doe and her young buck browsing the bushes just a few feet from me while I was eating my lunch there, near the Bow River. The heat got the better of me, though, and I just had to get back home, after being outdoors for hours. This pretty Echinacea flower was blooming in the gardens at the Calgary Zoo mid-September. They are one of my favourite garden flowers.
