Indian Village, Calgary Stampede

15 Jul 2013 2 1 366
Taken on 11 July 2013, when I spent a little time down at the Stampede Grounds with my youngest daughter. "Indian Village is a park featuring the colourful heritage of the five First Nations tribes of Treaty 7: the Siksika, Piikani, Kainai, Tsuu T’ina, and Stoney Nakoda Nations. There are 26 tipis in Indian Village, some of which are open for viewing every July. Indian Village has been an integral part of Stampede Park since the first Calgary Stampede in 1912. In 1974, it moved to its current location at the south end of the park, along the Elbow River. Events include performances by First Nations dancers, games and tipi-raising. First Nations interpreters are always available to provide information and commentary about their culture to visitors. Indian Village also hosts a Stampede Pow Wow where native dancers compete in colourful and intricate regalia for cash prizes. Guided tours of the Village are also available." www.canadiangeographic.ca/calgarystampede/english/indian-village/index.htm

Waiting for the big drop

These visitors to the Midway at the Calgary Stampede Grounds were much braver than me! This is one very, very tall pole, though my photo doesn't give that impression : ) I wonder if there is any warning before the ring of seats drops at top speed down to the ground. Makes me feel queasy just thinking about it! My youngest daughter and I were lucky that the sun was shining when we spent just a short time down at the Grounds, on 11 July 2013. You'd never think that two weeks before, the whole Grounds were under water, thanks to the Flood of the Century. People worked so hard to try and get everywhere pumped dry and cleaned up ready for the "Greatest Show on Earth". Certain events did have to be cancelled, but there was still plenty going on for people to have a great time.

This little piggie went to market ...

Yesterday, my youngest daughter and I went down to the Stampede Grounds, to soak up the feel of the annual "Greatest Show on Earth". We don't spend long down there, but we always look forward to the the Indian Village, Mini-Donuts and the baby pigs, lol. We like to wander through the agriculture area, too, seeing the beautiful horses, ponies, miniature horses and cattle. These are two of the tiny piglets that were with their Mom, each one a different colour from plain pink to mottled black. Not sure, but I think they were three days old. I must look up attendance numbers online - I'm curious because of the devastating Flood of the Century, which caused so much damage down at the Grounds (and everywhere else). You'd never guess that three weeks ago, the whole Grounds were under water. There were SO many people down there, enjoying themselves, which was so good to see. www.calgarystampede.com

Flashy and fun, the Mach 3

A reminder of the old days

10 Jul 2008 150
Part of a Carousel that is down at the Stampede Grounds for 10 days, part of the Midway (amusement park) for the duration of the 10-day Calgary Stampede. Yahoo! There is just something magical about an old-style Carousel.

Those were the days

Perhaps a boring photo? I just loved the metallic finish to these colourful Bumper Cars/Dodge'ems. My daughter (visiting Calgary from Vancouver for a week) and I didn't actually go on any of the rides at the Stampede Grounds yesterday morning, but all my kids used to enjoy the Bumper Cars many years ago. So did I!

Round and round they go

13 Jul 2011 200
Spent a few hours down at the Stampede grounds with my youngest daughter yesterday. Ha, I did about 8,000 steps on the hike on the Small Whalebackand on Sunday and then yesterday I did around 10,000 steps walking the Stampede Grounds. Couldn't believe my pedometer when I got home this afternoon after spending about four hours breathing in the smell from the food vendors, getting neck cramps from watching people get flung on a bungee-type ride or the high swings, watching Mom pig feed her 11 little piglets, seeing the most beautiful horses from Clydesdales to Miniatures. It is quite an experience to "do" the Grounds - thanks, Rachel, for a fun time! Ha, hope your photos turned out better than mine!

Hello, Smurfs

15 Jul 2011 207
Couldn't resist posting a shot of this big blue and white Smurf. He was hanging in one of the Midway game stalls at the Stampede Grounds on Tuesday, waiting for someone to win a game and take him home with them, when my youngest daughter and I went down to the Grounds for a few hours. I used to love watching the Smurfs on TV when my kids were young (many, many years ago, ha!).

Happily fed, sleeping piglets

14 Jul 2011 222
My youngest daughter and I love to go and see Momma pig and her piglets at the Stampede Grounds during Stampede. There were 11 of these beautiful little pink piggies and they had just been fed/ They love to climb over each other and snuggle into a huge heap of hairy bodies : ) Posting ridiculously early this morning, as I have a long, long day of botanizing east of the city, at Horseshoe Canyon today. This amazing canyon is near Drumheller, in the Badlands of Alberta (dinosaur country). Something like a two-hour drive to get out there.

Indian Village, Calgary Stampede

16 Jul 2011 216
The Indian Village has been a major part of the Calgary Stampede since the inception in 1912 and is one of my favourite parts of the Stampede Grounds during Stampede week. The ring of brightly decorated teepees gives visitors a small glimpse into traditional First Nations way of life.

Canadian Mountie - a friendly smile

16 Jul 2011 187
Just a quick snapshot of a cheerful, friendly member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police "on duty" in the Indian Village at the Calgary Stampede Grounds. He was busy chatting with visitors from far and near and of course posing wirth many of them for endless photos (the only reason I am posting a photo of a person, which normally I would never do).

Teepee opening

18 Jul 2011 171
I liked the colours and design of the opening of this teepee (tipi, tepee). Seen on one of the brightly coloured teepees in the Indian Village down at the Stampede Grounds, when I went with my youngest daughter on July 12th. The annual Calgary Stampede came to an end yesterday, so the city can now return to normal, lol. What a crazy 10 days, though my visit to the Grounds with my daughter was the only thing I went to. For visitors to the city, this 10-day event is amazing!

Way, way up

09 Jul 2008 141
Spent a couple of hours at the Stampede Grounds this morning with my daughter from Vancouver, soaking up the annual smell of grease and farm animals. The Calgary Stampede is known around the world and this huge Midway (amusement park) is just a part of all the events that happen during 10 days of Stampede. No one would ever get me on this ferris wheel!

The long way down

09 Jul 2008 160
This is a huge slide at the Stampede Grounds, set up as part of the Midway for Stampede week. I remember my kids coming down this many, many years ago : ). The Calgary Stampede is known around the world - 10 days of craziness! I spent a couple of hours wandering the Stampede Grounds this morning with my daughter from Vancouver (flickr, Silver Pomegranate), soaking up the smell of grease and farm animals, LOL! I was thinking of my 7-year-old grandson, knowing that he will have to miss the Stampede this year. He has a second-degree burn all over the top half of his body (not the lower half, as far as I know yet). He and his parents have very fair skin and always take great caution when out in the sun. Now that school is out, my grandson is in daycare and unfortunately the worker(s) there used ordinary sunscreen (#8, I believe) instead of the very powerful sunscreen that had been given to them to use by my son and daughter-in-law!!!! Apparently, my grandson has blisters the size of golfballs, so I can only imagine what pain he is in. He's not allowed to go out of the house for the next three weeks, poor kid!

It's all in the genes

I spent a couple of hours this morning at the Stampede Grounds with my daughter from Vancouver (flickr, Silver Pomegranate), soaking up the smell of grease and farm animals. Stampede Week is a week of craziness, but you feel you just HAVE to go and experience the atmosphere. As soon as we entered the Stampede Grounds, the first thing we both photographed was this small log cabin with peeling paint. Both of us love taking macros, but this time I thought I would include her in my photo, while she was busy photographing the textures close up.

The Spectacled Duck - a new species

09 Jul 2008 152
Spent a couple of hours this morning wandering round the Stampede Grounds with my daughter from Vancouver. The Calgary Stampede is known around the world - such a crazy time and very popular with tourists as well as local people. There is a huge Midway with many "rides" and game booths. These cute little ducks kept moving along a narrow waterway at one booth - no idea what the purpose of the game was, but they looked cute coming round the corner in the sunshine. I was thinking of my 7-year-old grandson when I saw these, knowing that he will have to miss the Stampede this year. He has a second-degree burn all over the top half of his body (not the lower half, as far as I know yet). He and his parents have very fair skin and always take great caution when out in the sun. A bee up close

10 Jul 2008 179
I'm looking forward to seeing what photos my daughter (who lives in Vancouver but is in Calgary for a week at the moment) eventually posts to flickr or sends me in a regular e-mail. We spent a couple of hours together yesterday morning wandering round the Stampede Grounds, soaking up the annual Calgary Stampede atmosphere. This is just a silly photo, of one of the "bumble bees" that are part of one of the Midway (amusement park) rides. For sure, I can't stay away from nature for long, LOL! Actually, I was also curious to see how sharp this image would be in original size - a stationary object taken in full sunlight, unlike most of my usual subjects.
