Problems with Flickr, again. This morning, I'm finding it difficult to even open the Flickr website. It worked this one time, but not two others - the pink and blue dots rolled forever. Hmm, I wonder what else I'll find that won't work. Just found the following from a Staff Member on the Help Forum:
"It looks like we are experiencing some network related issues. We are working hard to resolve them."
This photo was taken about two and a half weeks ago, on 8 September 2015. In the morning, I joined a group of friends for a three-hour stroll at Inglewood Bird Sanctuary. 38 bird species were seen, though I didn't manage to see any of the tiny, fast-moving Warblers. It was good to see 28 Wood Ducks, but they were far, far away, in an area that is still closed due to devastating flood damage. The Sanctuary had been closed for about two years for this reason and only very recently re-opened just a part of the area.
The Calgary Zoo is very close to the Sanctuary, so after our morning walk, I decided to call in at the Zoo. I hadn't been for about a year and I really missed going there. Of course, many of the garden flowers were past their prime, but I did find a few that were fit to photograph.
I knew I wouldn't be able to walk far, having already been walking all morning, but I really wanted to get to the ENMAX Conservatory to see what was going on. I had been longing all spring and summer to see the tropical butterflies and plants. The butterfly season will be coming to an end for these tropical beauties, but there were still plenty of them to be seen. Also, I was told that this month, the parking lot that I use will close for the winter and I don't like the drive back home from the north parking area, using Deerfoot Trail, so tend not to go to the Zoo all winter.
There was so much activity going on at the Zoo this day. People everywhere, carrying large animals wrapped in white, protective coverings, preparing for the ILLUMINASIA, Lantern & Garden Festival that has now just started. Each animal is an individual lantern and there are so many of them. I noticed that several of the real animals in their enclosures were watching all the unaccustomed activity, which made me smile.
A good day, despite the overcast sky, and plenty of photo opportunities. Recently, I have been finding far fewer things to photograph, with fall on its way and now already arrived, so a day like this was more than welcome.

Red bokeh

Not the best photo of the butterfly, but the bright red bokeh is so welcome today. 6C and rain, rain and more rain : ) I suspect this weather will bring down a lot of the golden leaves from the trees, ready for the arrival of winter weather. It is supposed to turn sunny again, though, in a couple of days. Photograph taken at the Calgary Zoo on October 4th - very few butterflies to be seen, as the indoor, tropical butterfly season comes to an end.
The closest I can come to for an ID is Tiger Longwing, Heliconius hecale. The butterfly in my image does have quite a large off-white patch on the hind wing, though, so I'm not 100% certain with my ID.
Love those soccer ball eyes

Well, I can't say I've actually seen a soccer ball recently, but these eyes always make me think of soccer balls. This butterfly actually stayed still for a while, but even so, this was the only photo that was just about sharp enough to use : ) Photographed at the Calgary Zoo in the ENMAX Conservatory on May 2nd.

Tiger Longwing, Heliconius hecale - one of the butterflies in the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo, seen on 10th May. Loved the colours in the bokeh : )
I'm going to absolutely collapse in a short while, with a mug of coffee and the sandwich I took with me today but never ate. A handful of us made a return visit today to Rod Handfield's property south west of the city, and we spent the whole day botanizing and mushrooming. Totally exhausted and I need some "lunch" and coffee. I think I am totally "mushroomed out" - it's a wonderful forest to explore and we found all sorts of interesting things. I'm filthy, tired and hungry .... and happy : )
Thanks, Art, for looking up the ID. I found it as Tiger Longwing, Heliconius hecale - it didn't mention "zuleika". Heliconius hecale is good enough, though.
Butterfly magic

This beautiful butterfly (at the Calgary Zoo) happened to land right on the tip of this long leaf, so I was lucky to get an uncluttered background. I was there again this afternoon, feeling like I was in a sauna, and was thrilled to bits to see a few butterflies that I hadn't seen on previous visits. Our weather forecast is depressing for the next few days, so thought I'd better go while there was at least a bit of sun. The new Enmax Conservatory is such a great place to go when you are feeling photography withdrawal symptoms after too many walks where everything is way, way in the distance. You can click away to your heart's content : )

I need to check on the ID for this butterfly, but I always enjoy seeing this particular kind with its black and white spots. Just another butterfly shot from the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo, LOL. Eventually, I will run out of new photos of them - maybe .... : ) I think the ID is Tiger Longwing Butterfly.

This was about the only butterfly in the Butterfly House at the Calgary Zoo that stayed still for quite a few moments this afternoon, so I made the most of it. I think this might be a Tiger Longwing (Heliconius hecale).
