Nothing but pink

17 Feb 2014 210
Another photo that I grabbed from my archives yesterday, taken on 18 December 2008. Not the best photo of this pink Carnation - I find them difficult to photograph, especially the ones that are all one colour.

Orange Star centre

I thought the centre of this flower was unusual. Bought this Orange Star plant from Safeway (of course).

Coiled

22 Jan 2009 130
LOL, yes, this is a totally different kind of photo from me! Again, I came across this one last night - taken with my second digital camera, a Canon Powershot S3 IS. I love anything that has a coil pattern : ). This is a large (maybe 12"), abstract "ornament" that I have in my little kitchen.

A little too close for comfort

"The Hypsizygus tessellatus or shimeji is an edible mushroom native to East Asia. Buna shimeji is cultivated locally in Europe, North America and Australia and sold fresh in markets." Taken from Wikipedia. I think I'm right in saying that these are Bunapi shimeji. At least two years ago, I noticed a small container of these at Safeway, my grocery store, but felt they were a litttle too expensive to buy, just to photograph. Then on 15 April 2013, I noticed that Safeway had finally got another package of them lying on the shelf amongst all the more usual mushrooms. Not expensive at all, so here they are, in macro size, lol! Apologies to the first few people who commented on this image - they may have thought I'd walked for hours in some dark forest to find these! Needless to say, this is a macro photo. And, no, I didn't eat them : ) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hypsizygus_tessellatus en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shimeji

Bold and beautiful

05 Apr 2013 1 1 201
Another image from my archives, found tucked away in an old "To maybe post on Flickr" folder. I find that I have now reached a point where I can't always remember which photos I have posted or not posted, after uploading 8,736 photos to my photostream, lol!! Thank heavens for Flickr's Archives feature, which I have just started to use! This beautiful Dahlia was in a small bunch of flowers that I had bought from Safeway.

Spring versus yesterday's snow

04 Apr 2013 252
Needed a splash of bright colour this morning, as winter has returned to Calgary - colder and a bit of snow. Had problems uploading my photos today, so now have to rush to go out shortly.

Need colour? You got it!

A vibrant Strawflower from the archives, taken on 5 October 2009. This morning, the sun is actually shining, but in Calgary, you never know what will be happening in a few minutes' time : ) I think this orange-red flower is a cultivar. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xerochrysum_bracteatum Yes, folks, it's spring, but you'd never guess it! The sun finally came out yesterday afternoon and I made a spur of the moment decision to go and check out a pond in SW Calgary, to see if it was open water. No, it was still frozen over, but I did catch an American Robin feeding on the ground nearby. Also saw two pairs of Canada Geese along the edge of the pond. I then thought that, seeing as I had driven this far, I might as well go further and see if I could see any sign of a Northern Hawk Owl that a few people had seen recently. Nothing, of course, but I took a few shots of the ice that was covering the trees and shrubs. Having come this far from the city, I reckoned that I might as well try another place I enjoy. By the time I had reached my furthest point, the dark clouds had rolled in and it began to snow! Wishful thinking took over, and sure enough, it worked again! Found myself a Great Gray Owl : ) The falling snowflakes created white, blurry blobs in many of my photos, but I picked out a few that are OK. So glad I decided to push myself out the front door.

White Shimeji Mushrooms

A splash of colour

19 Feb 2012 180
Couldn't resist a small bunch of brightly coloured Tulips when I was doing grocery shopping a few days ago.

Vibrant

08 Nov 2011 233
Not the most brilliant refractions, I know, but I like the mix of warm colours of the background. Taken yesterday morning, after a contractor knocked on my front door and said there had been a mix-up and they won't be replacing my front door for another week : ) My reaction (after a couple of other reactions!) was to grab my camera and play for a few minutes, ha..

Just playing

18 Oct 2011 175
Grabbed my camera and my toothbrush (lol!) and "played" for just a minute or two in my kitchen the other day. Though the image is grainy, I kind of liked the colours. Just couldn't "get into it" - I knew there were so many other much more important things that I should be doing : ) I think I'm right in saying that the flowers are Chrysanthemums.

Christmas colours

27 Oct 2011 206
Wasn't sure whether to post this or not, but I kind of liked the warm colours - not that I want to think about Christmas! Another of my toothbrush waterdop photos, lol. Almost forgot that I have a routine dentist appointment around lunch time today. Noticed yesterday that work has now been started on replacing everyone's front door and patio door. Couldn't believe all the construction mess - I was picturing them more-or-less bringing ready made doors and just putting them in place and making minor adjustments, ha. Looks like it's going to be a cold time indoors when they do this, as once the weekend is over, our daily high temperatures will be around 3-5C. It's 2C (36F) this morning. Will be even less fun when all the windows have to be replaced! And then it's the roof ... sigh. Too bad they didn't arrange to have all this done during the warmer part of the year! Work will apparently be stopped, though, when the weather reaches -15C! Also, apparently the contractor has a 9-week contract for work elsewhere, so maybe I still have quite a wait for my new windows.

Dying Venus

07 Nov 2011 193
A couple of the leaves of my Venus Flytrap plant have died, but I thought this leaf tip (about half an inch long) was still a fascinating shape, even if dark brown and not bright green. Just imagine being an insect and having those spikes snap shut around you, so that you could be devoured by the plant : ) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Venus_Flytrap

Feather stripes

Refraction in a little water droplet on a bird feather - in my kitchen : )

Needed a change

25 Feb 2011 136
Just a shell that I have at home - thought the colours and shape were quite pretty.

Turban shell

29 Jan 2011 177
A quick shot taken partly because I have barely set foot outside my front door the past month and partly because everyone is perhaps getting fed up with nothing but flower, bird, mushroom and snow photos on my phototsream, lol. I think I've identified this shell correctly, but I don't know exactly which type of Turban it is. It snowed again overnight and this morning, maybe 6" or so?

Desire and passion

12 Nov 2010 140
This didn't come out quite how I was expecting, as I had placed this gorgeous Rose against my WHITE fridge! Actually, I bought this flower to photograph, ready to make into a photo tribute for 10-year-old Zahra Baker, in North Carolina, US. However, I needed to wait until the human remains just discovered have been tested and presumably determined to be those of this amazing young girl. In the meantime, I decided on a different idea for a tribute photo (partly because the floral meaning of an orange Rose was not what I wanted), but I still must wait. I don't know how many of you have followed this brutal, tragic case - about as sickening and heart-wrenching as a murder can be. This young girl looks so sweet in the photos and videos of her. She survived bone cancer and lung cancer, had a below-the-knee amputation as a result of the cancer, and wore a hearing aid. Yet, despite all these battles, you only saw photos of her with a smile that lit up her whole face. Her father and her stepmother have not yet been charged with her murder. How can any parent do such horrendous things to such a sweet child? How can anyone abuse and kill their own little girl??? Yes, this kind of News is unpleasant and upsetting. Some people will choose not to watch this kind of News, which I can understand. However, I have always been someone who wants to know everything, no matter how bad. I want to be aware and not live with closed eyes and ears. I believe people need to know what goes on, including so that they can maybe step in when it's needed. Any suspicions of abuse need to be reported - we have a moral obligation to do so. Tragically, in Zahra's case, many reports were made, but nothing was done ...... and now this young girl is dead.
