Purple Rain

This beautiful Water Lily was standing tall and upright when I first started taking photos of it at the Calgary Zoo on 16 April 2013. Then, on came the sprinklers, and the weight of the water made it lean right over. Gave me the chance, though, to see the flowerhead from different angles. Truly beautiful from which ever way you look at it. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nymphaeaceae

Red-bellied toad / genus Bombina

I had originally labelled this frog as a Northern Leopard Frog, but Flickr member, boko_1980, corrected my ID and gave me the correct ID of Red-bellied Toad. This is one of the huge benefits of Flickr - having people who can help you identify fauna and flora correctly. I always do my best to label things with the correct name, but this is a huge learning process for me : ) Thanks so much, boko_1980! Much appreciated! Is this the same as a Fire-bellied Toad, I wonder? This little Red-bellied Toad was having fun in a tiny pool inside the old Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo, back in the summer of 2007. I always like seeing the thin black lines that appear around the edges of leaves when in water.

Treasures on a lily pad

This photo always makes me smile, as it reminds me of a conversation I had with a photographer (with a large lens, lol!) at the Calgary Zoo on September 20th. When I was photographing this pretty little scene, he was telling me that some photographers will deliberately pick a flower off one of the tropical plants and put it on or near the lily pads in the small pond in there. Funny, it had never ever gone through my mind to do such a thing! I'd feel too guilty to pick a flower in the first place! Of course, some little children do this too, no doubt. I would always know that my image was "fake" if I did that - you can so often tell when a photographer has "arranged" something themselves, I think : ) Of course, sometimes they will say that's what they did.

The lily pad

Not a very good specimen but this was the only flower and I've always longed to take a photo of a water lily. This one was in the Butterfly House at the Calgary Zoo.
