I think I can ... I think I can ...

This was this little owlet's first day out of the nest. A whole, big world to explore. Here, it found a very thin, small "tree" with a curved trunk and we watched with baited breath as it tried to climb by digging in its claws and flapping its wings. It finally made it to the top of the curve where it waited and waited for Mom to eventually fly in with a Meadow Vole. I always think owlets are the cutest little things when they have their feathered legs straightened out. Taken on 3 June 2012, NW of Calgary. A few days later, I felt totally privileged to have the chance to hold this beautiful youngster on the evening it was being banded. An opportunity that friends and I will never forget.

The touch of winter

It's the "Famous Five" again : ) Took a drive SW of the city a couple of afternoons ago, 10 November 2012, expecting to see a lot more snow on the fields. Some roads were more snow-covered than others. Plenty of snow at the edges of the roads, though, so I had to be careful that I didn't pull off the road more than a few inches, as I really didn't want to find myself stuck. It felt so good to finally have a sunny day after two or three weeks of overcast, dreary weather!

Musical chairs

There are lots of these short posts down in various parts of the local park, around the parking lots. I remember going there one time and having a Chickadee, a White-breasted Nuthatch, a Downy Woodpecker, a Hairy Woodpecker and a Northern Flicker all on one row - at the SAME time!! Taken on 2nd March 2007!
