Winter's splendour

05 Apr 2014 188
On 1 April 2014, I arrived home from an appointment and running a few errands, and this is what I saw when I looked up at my bedroom window. These delicate icicles made a fringe all around my roof, and they looked so pretty. Just had to get my camera : ) For a day or two, something similar was happening along the bottom edge of my car, too, lol! Yesterday and today have been more like spring - sunshine, blue sky and a few degrees warmer. The snow has been melting quite nicely, which feels so good, after six months of snow and ice on the ground. Maybe spring is here to stay?? This morning, the temperature is -2C (windchill -6C), but it's supposed to get up to 10C this afternoon. Monday and Tuesday are forecast to get up to 14C, followed by slightly cooler days.

Fragile beauty

I arrived home yesterday (1 April 2014) from an appointment and running a few errands, and this is what I saw when I looked up at my bedroom window. These delicate icicles made a fringe all around my roof, and they looked so pretty. Just had to get my camera - not sure which setting I had it on, but it's not just a regular image. The last few days, something similar was happening along the bottom edge of my car, too, lol! Temperature this morning is -3C (windchill is also -3C). A few flurries are in the forecast for this afternoon and evening, but at least we should be getting sun for the next few days, which will feel so good! Is it just me, or maybe a temporary glitch, but the Sets that a photo is in on Flickr seem to now be above the Groups that it's in? If this is a "permanent" (ha, ha) change, that's great!

Frozen

Found this little leaf edged with beautiful ice crystals just over a year ago (on 16th October 2010), somwhere between Bebo Grove and Shannon Terrace in Fish Creek Park.

Fire and ice

Yes, it's here : ) Now my photo focus has to turn from fungi, wildflowers and insects to winter themes, such as this ice-fringed autumn leaf. The snow that fell heavily yesterday has already disappeared, thank goodness, but this morning I had to scrape a really hard layer of ice off my car windows before I went over to Bebo Grove, Fish Creek Park, for a three and a half hour walk. The temperature was about -3C when I left the house. No sign of the American Three-toed Woodpecker today, but we did see a Boreal Chickadee again, and a Townsend's Solitaire atop a very tall tree. I'm always happy to take a quick shot or two of leaves fringed with wonderful ice crystals.

Northern Gentian

In reality, this is just one very small flower on a stem full of similar flowers. I love seeing the tiny fringe when seen close up. This Northern Gentian, also called Felwort, is one of several native, wild Gentians that grow in Alberta. Seen on a day of botanizing yesterday, south of the city on Rod Handfield's acreage. What a gorgeous place to walk, through the forest, eyes down to catch every fungus - and to notice all the hundreds of fallen logs and branches that lie in wait to trip you, LOL.

Against blue

A small, uncommon fungus found growing on a small branch in Weaselhead and photographed on 17th June 2009. I really liked the fringing around the edge : ) Doug, I looked for a photo of this same mushroom in your photostream, but couldn't find one. Could have sworn you'd posted one ages ago : ) Later: ID, Polyporus arcularius, Spring Polypore - thanks, Doug! LOL, I'm paying the price for trying to cross a tiny creek yesterday morning. I just knew it was a tiny bit wider than I felt comfortable with. However, it was either jump or cross via several small rocks that could have been treacherously slippery. Either my jump was a bit too short or else the ice-grabbers on my winter boots caught the edge of the snowy bank, but I landed really heavily on my knees - which I always have problems with, so this was not a good thing! So, now I have two swollen, stiff and very painful knees - and I've been watching more TV than I ever normally do, avoiding climbing upstairs to my computer : ) Later: it has been bothering me ever since I typed the above. So, I feel I must add that I am thankful for the pain in my knees after my fall, because it means that I HAVE two legs - something that so many people in Haiti can't say, after their devastating earthquake. My heart is with them.
