Atlas Moth / Attacus atlas

Photographed in the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo yesterday afternoon, 21 August 2012. There was a rack with a number of pupa hanging from it and a couple of these emerged Atlas Moths. They are incredible, huge Moths, but I never seem to get a photo of one that I am happy with, ha. Always fascinated by their amazing antennae and their unusual legs.
"Atlas moths are considered to be the largest moths in the world in terms of total wing surface area (upwards of c. 400 square cm or 65 square inches). Their wingspans are also amongst the largest, from 25-30 cm (10-12 inches). Females are appreciably larger and heavier .... The Atlas moth (Attacus atlas) is a large saturniid moth found in the tropical and subtropical forests of Southeast Asia, and common across the Malay archipelago"

Pupa

Found this strange looking pupa (?) attached to what I think was a species of Willow when I went for a walk by Maclean Pond, off Elbow Falls Trail (Highway 66), Kananaskis.
Later: I had to dash out early this morning to meet with friends to spend the day at Bow Valley Provincial Park - roughly a 45-minute drive west from Calgary - and, because I overslept by an hour, I didn't have time to write all my descriptions before I left home. It was gloomy and raining, but we decided that we would still go. We found quite a few wildflowers - unfortunately, though, because everything was covered in millions of teeny raindrops, almost every one of my photos came out blurry, lol! I was also having a few problems with my camera, which does not feel good! Everywhere looked beautiful, clean and fresh and SO green from all the rain we've been having, but there was barely any sign of the surrounding mountains, which were covered in very low cloud and mist. Thanks so much for organizing this trip, Sandy, and thank you, Stephen, for driving us out there and back. So much appreciated!
Red Spotted Swallowtail butterfly pupae

During the tropical butterfly display season in the ENMAX Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo, there are racks of butterfly pupae behind glass, and it is fascinating to see the variety of shapes and colours. Shot through dirty glass : ) On one of my last visits, I was watching a butterfly actually emerge very slowly from its pupa.

Ladybug pupa

I was thrilled to bits when I happened to look down (on July 21st) and noticed this tiny Ladybug pupa on a plant amongst the grasses. On a nearby stem was a tiny larva, too. I had no idea about the different, fascinating stages a Ladybug goes through until just a few years ago.
Oh, Flickr has Hiccups ......
