Common Flax

06 Sep 2015 4 3 399
This macro photo was taken on 23 June 2015, on a botany walk at Griffith Woods, off Highway 8 in Calgary. These small, delicate flowers on long, thin stems are almost impossible to photograph when it's windy, or even with a slight breeze : ) We have three species of Flax growing wild in Alberta - Yellow Flax, Common Flax and Wild Blue Flax. This photo shows Common Flax, which is not a native plant, unlike the other two species. Common Flax has flowers that are a deeper blue than those of Wild Blue Flax. It is an annual plant that is cultivated for its linseed oil and fibres. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flax

Bluer than the sky

Not sure if this is Common Flax or Wild Blue Flax. I thought it was the first, but now I'm not sure. Anyway, it's Flax : ) It did seem to be a darker shade of blue. Delicate flowers that are so blue and beautiful. This one was growing at Jim Coutts' homestead, near Nanton, south of Calgary, where we spent part of the day on Friday.

As blue as the sky

Right now, I'd be more than happy to see any of these species - it's snowing yet again : )

Common Flax seedpod

This tiny seedpod looked almost like a tiny lantern when the sun was shining on it. It belongs to Common Flax, which is an introduced annual that is cultivated for its linseed oil and fibres. The flowers are deeper blue than those of the native Wild Blue Flax. Seen at Pearce Estate.

An annual cultivated for its linseed oil and fibres. Flowers last only for a single day. Such a beautiful blue!

Can't remember if this is Common Flax or Wild Blue Flax. I think it is the introduced kind. I know I should write down every detail as I am walking, but somehow it doesn't always happen that way. Doug, perhaps you would point me in the right ID direction - thanks!
