American White Pelican

I took almost all my American White Pelican photos on the same evening, 25th July 2005. The evening sun could not have been any more beautiful or perfect, gradually changing the colour of each bird.

Double

Two more Pelicans from down by the Calgary Weir on the Bow River, taken on 25th July 2005. Many dozens of American White Pelicans can congregate at the Weir in the summer and I just happened to choose a beautiful evening to go down there. The evening sun could not have been more incredible and perfect.

Counting Cormorants

How I wish I had been the other side of the Bow River that day, looking down on this long line of Double-crested Cormorants! No sign of any American White Pelicans - maybe they have all left Calgary by now.

American White Pelicans

This is an old photo that I thought I would add to my American Pelican Set. To see dozens of these large, impressive birds all together at the Bow River Weir is so amazing. LOL, I always think they look like Zoo escapees!

American White Pelican

The evening sun on the day I picked to visit the American White Pelicans gave these majestic birds a golden glow. Each year, they gather by the Weir on the Bow River in Calgary. There can be many dozens of them gathering at the same time and you can see the frenzy when several spot the same fish! Each bird is slightly different, with varying amounts of black on their feathers. This photo has been used in "The Atlas of Breeding Birds of Alberta", published 2007, which was a nice surprise!
