Little green hearts

I still remember the first time I took a close look at these Ornamental Cabbages (Brassica oleracea), growing in the garden at the Calgary Zoo back in 2007. Couldn't believe my eyes when I saw that a few of them were decorated with these little green hearts. This photo was taken a few years later, on 25 September 2012.
After yesterday's snow (12 April 2014), it has pretty well all melted and the sun is shining this morning. The temperature is 0°C, expected to climb to 4°C this afternoon. Tomorrow is expected to get up to 12°C and be mainly sunny.
Tiny treasures

This is one of my favourite native wildflowers - White Camas. When I downloaded my photos from yesterday's day of botanizing at Sundre Natural Area (north west of Calgary) to my computer last night, and cropped this zoomed-in photo, I discovered there was a tiny spider hiding in there along with the gorgeous beetle. I have a better shot of the latter, showing its patterns, which I will eventually post. Don't you just love these rings of tiny green hearts? : )
"White camas (Zygadenus elegans) is a member of the lily family, and is commonly found in open areas and lightly wooded montane regions. Narrow, pale silver-green leaves at the base compliment the long, showy floral spike, which bears several individual creamy green six-petaled flowers. The bulb of this plant is poisonous, but not so much so as that of its relative, the death camas. Camas blooms from July through August." From en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:DwWhitecamus.jpg
Happy Valentine's Day

Angel Wing Begonia - I love the name of this plant that was growing at the Calgary Zoo, November 2007, in the old Conservatory. Thought today was an appropriate day to post these small, pink hearts. Happy Valentine's Day, everyone!
Bleeding Heart

I used to have a small, straggly Bleeding Heart plant in my garden, but it died several years ago. The plant in my photo was growing at the Reader Rock Garden. I always enjoy seeing photos of these posted by others, so I hope my little dangling hearts bring joy to you today - even more so, as it has just started to rain, and thunderstorms are in the forecast.
American Kestrel

Unfortunately, not taken in the wild! I do see American Kestrels in the wild here, but always from a great distance. Seeing this particular bird at the Coaldale Birds of Prey Centre, near Lethbridge, southern Alberta, gave me a chance to see a Kestrel up close. This is a male, as it has a rusty back and blue/grey wing feathers. Really, a very attractive bird. These falcons typically perch on power lines, which helps identify them.
Little red hearts

You'll be sick of seeing yet another photo of this beautiful tulip, but I just had to post a shot of the whole centre pattern. These tiny red hearts fascinate me - I don't remember ever seeing hearts in a tulip before. I feel like reaching out with my hands to get some warmth on yet another bitterly cold day. Back to -30C with windchill at the moment. This WILL end, this WILL end, this WILL end ......
This image was included in the book "FOCUS: LOVE: Your World, Your Images" book, published by Lark Books. I received a complimentary copy about 30th December 2009. A delightful book!
Hearts

I think these tiny leaves are so pretty and heart-shaped. I liked them against the different shades of yellow, orange and brown leaves.
When the leaves are gone

Love the bright purple stems of the Ornamental Kale. When the leaves fall off (or are pulled off), they leave a rather wide, heart-shaped mark on the stem.

When I was examining these Ornamental Cabbages, growing in a large planter in North Glenmore Park, I noticed the leaves had little green hearts on them, LOL! How cute!
