Botanizing Beagles - Ben and Maggie

25 Jul 2018 269
This photo was taken at the Erlton/Roxboro Natural Area, not far from downtown Calgary, yesterday afternoon, 24 July 2018. These two Beagles belong to our leader. It is the richest botanical area, for its size, within the city. Over 385 species have been recorded in an area of about three hectares. (All of Fish Creek Provincial Park has only about 460 species). Eighty species, however, are aliens, now occupying 90+% of the Erlton/Roxboro Natural Area. It is such a shame to see how the area is being devastated by plants that include Baby's Breath, Creeping Thistle, Yellow Clematis and other invasive species. The weather forecast for yesterday afternoon called for a risk of a thunderstorm. The sky was dark and gloomy, but we were very lucky that the rain stayed away. Our temperature at 9:00 this morning, 25 July 2018, is only 12C, which feels really good. This afternoon, it is supposed to get up to 23C.

Allium up close

A photo of an Allium flower from my archives, taken on 8 August 2012 at the Reader Rock Garden. I haven't yet been anywhere this spring where there are garden flowers, but I would imagine that at least a few early bloomers have flowered, such as Hepatica. "Allium is a monocot genus of flowering plants, informally referred to as the onion genus. The generic name Allium, the Latin word for garlic, is said to come from the Greek αλεω, to avoid, because of its offensive smell. The genus, including the various edible onions, garlics, chives, scallion and leeks, has played a pivotal role in cooking worldwide, as the various parts of the plants, either raw or cooked in many ways, produce a large variety of flavors and textures. The genus contains hundreds of distinct species; many have been harvested through human history, but only about a dozen are still economically important today as crops or garden vegetables. Many others are cultivated as ornamental plants." From Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allium

The beauty of Alliums

Photgraphed this Allium flower at the Reader Rock Garden on 24 July 2013. "Allium is a monocot genus of flowering plants, informally referred to as the onion genus. I LOVE Alliums - see, Rebecca, great minds think alike : ) This huge beauty was growing in a spectacular garden that we visited a few weeks ago. That evening, we had visited a gentleman's cactus garden, and this other garden was just a few houses away. I just love all the tiny, "metallic-looking" stars. A handful of us went out to hike in Bragg Creek Provincial Park, west of the city, this morning, but ended up having to end our walk because of torrential rain! We did attempt to wait it out by going for delicious hot chocolate/coffee (a welcome treat - thanks to Dorothy and Stephen), but the rain just didn't quit. I think we have to wait till Friday before the weather improves, unless the forecast changes.

Intricacy

Not sure what this flower is - some kind of onion? The delicate, intricate design with the sun shining on it caught my eye at the Reader Rock Garden.

I always enjoy seeing Allium flowers - this one was photographed at the Reader Rock Garden in Calgary on August 11th last year.

A taste of what's to come

A floral explosion of Alliums seen at Reader Rock Garden on July 28th last year. Was out with friends on a three-hour walk this morning, in the Sikome and Burnsmead areas of Fish Creek Park. We had 30 species of birds, which was pretty good, and one deer (plus the legs of a second deer found on the path - maybe it was Coyotes that picked the remains clean) and one little Richardson's Ground Squirrel (commonly called Gopher). Best of all was the fact that the sun was shining and the sky was blue.

I love any kind of Allium plant : ) This one was growing in someone's incredible garden, here in the city, a few weeks ago. I just liked the soft colouring of this image, and the bokeh. I spent this morning at another garden, the Reader Rock Garden. Got down on my knees to photograph some lilies and when I stood up, a friend started brushing off all the ants that had crawled over my jacket. Well, I was conscious all afternoon, when I was doing my weekly volunteer shift, of the fact that I had received a few itching ant bites and also could swear I still feel ants crawling through my hair and around my body, LOL. Driving me nuts! Oh, well, it was worth it - as long as at least some of my photos come out : )
