This photo was taken on 31 May 2012, NW of Calgary and NW of Cochrane. The very first day out of the nest for this young Northern Hawk Owl was 28 May 2012. Here, Mom has just flown in with a rodent (Meadow Vole?) for her hungry youngster - not very clear in the background, but you can see a tiny leg and tail. We learned a lot from this beautiful little owl family and they gave us so much pleasure. No sign of them this year, which was so disappointing, but it did save me some long drives.
