Coiled

22 Jan 2009 130
LOL, yes, this is a totally different kind of photo from me! Again, I came across this one last night - taken with my second digital camera, a Canon Powershot S3 IS. I love anything that has a coil pattern : ). This is a large (maybe 12"), abstract "ornament" that I have in my little kitchen.

In my garden

After spending just half an hour gardening a couple of days ago, I had to stop, as I was getting really painful. I tend to spend just a couple of hours a year in my little square patch - just too overwhelming to deal with. After digging and tugging and twisting about eight of these invasive fern plants out of the soil, I reckoned the very least I could do was to take a photo of the bright green coils. That was the more pleasant part - the rest of the "work" was not enjoyed at all, LOL! By the way, the white background resulted from shooting towards my light grey siding, which was really blown out because of the very bright sunlight: )

The perfect coil

Love the way these wild Asters coil their dying petals so perfectly. Photographed at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park on 23 September 2010.

Curling tendril

28 Sep 2011 140
I always have a hard time when I try and photograph the tendrils of these plants, hanging in the Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo - they come out white and blown-out. This time, it worked better. Macro shot taken on September 26th.

Coils

So, this is how my weird (some might call it creative or artistic, LOL!!) mind works ... I was about to unplug my kettle before going to bed around 1:00 a.m. (yes, A.M.), and found myself looking at the white coil design on a black mug next to the kettle. Next thing that went through my mind was "waterdrop refraction - could I do it?). And so, here is one result that came out just about sharp enough to post : ) Can't remember what time I finally got to bed, ha. The colours make me think of chocolate and caramel ... mmm. Talking about "artistic", I had a lovely comment on a Christmas card with a little round, English Robin on it. "All our family have enjoyed your fantastic photos on your wesite!" It was from a long-time friend who lives in Warwick, England, whom I met when we were both at Teacher Training College together "many" years ago. She was, and I'm quite sure still is, such a talented, artistic person - something I've never forgotten. Joyce, this one's for you, just to say thank you to you all for taking the trouble to look me up on Flickr and taking a look at some of my images. I love knowing that I've been able to share a little bit of the amazing nature in my tiny corner of the world with you! Hope one of you might just happen to see this little message : )

Patterns and shapes

Decided to post something that isn't a flower, a bird or a mushroom, LOL! I collected many species of shells many years ago and thought I would use my macro lens on one of them the other day. I've always been fascinated by shells that have a zig-zag pattern on them - can't for the life of me think of the word that is on the tip of my tongue that I wanted to use instead of "zig-zag" : ) Later: the zig-zag patterns remind me of seismographs : ) Think that's the right word.

Unfurled beauty

These coils always fascinate me - so cleverly "designed". They grow right in the centre of the tall leaf stalks and can so easily be missed as one walks by.

Sawfly

This Sawfly was the first one I had ever seen or at least noticed. It landed on a friend's litter-stick (i.e. for picking up garbage in the parks).
