I think this very small piece of ice had formed when the snow had melted in a footstep in the snow. No idea how I happened to notice it, but I did, lol! Just had to pick it up and hold it up to where the sun was trying to break through the clouds. Looks like one of the local Deer from the park : ) Sometimes, my friends must really think I'm weird, ha! Taken yesterday on a walk at Votier's Flats, Fish Creek Park. Actually, it was a heavily overcast morning, with a most unpleasant cold wind. Gotta dash, as I overslept till 11:00 a.m. (after getting to bed around 3:00 a.m.) and I have a volunteer shift to get to. It's snowing, again.
Hope all my American friends will be lucky enough to enjoy a good meal tomorrow. A special Happy Thanksgiving to all those US servicemen and women (and their families, who also make so many sacrifices), who risk their lives on a daily basis, in order to keep the rest safe and free. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! We have so much to be thankful for, even in the hardest of times. Special thoughts, also, for the people over on the east coast, who have been having such a difficult time due to Hurricane Sandy. Remember to enjoy the small things in life - they tend to be the most important things, too. Please drive safely if you are on the roads.
Too pretty to eat?

This beautiful 8" Squash caught my eye when I was searching for a regular Acorn Squash in Safeway recently. Isn't nature just amazing?! I've always been fascinated by pumpkins, squash and gourds. There is a label underneath, giving cooking instructions, so I think I may actually cook it and eat it - yes, I bought it to take photos of it, LOL. Does anyone know if these taste really good? A bit later: it has now been in the oven almost half an hour, so is about half way cooked. I should have looked more carefully at the label, as it gives the name, Turban Squash : ) Hope it tastes good, as there is a LOT of it, ha, ha. Much later: yummy, it WAS good!

Bur/Burr Oak is perhaps my favourite tree - though I have to admit that I don't know much about trees at all, despite being told more than enough times. In the fall, Bur Oak leaves can turn brilliant yellow, but this fall has been short. The snow that was forecast to arrive overnight thank goodness didn't arrive, other than a few snowflakes when I was walking this morning. I'm really, really hoping that it stays away. We did have rain overnight, though, and it has been grey and gloomy all day, and it's cold. Wore a fleece jacket under my winter jacket, plus toque, long-johns and two pairs of gloves!! It might just as well be winter, LOL!
"The Quercus macrocpoopa or Bur Oak, sometimes spelled Burr Oak, is a species of oak in the white oak section.... Bur oak makes an outstanding ornamental tree. It is one of the most tolerant of urban conditions of the white oaks, and is one of the fastest-growing of the group.... It withstands chinook conditions in Calgary.
The leaves are 7-15 cm (3-6 in) long and 5-13 cm (2-5 in) broad, variable in shape, with a lobed margin. Most often, the basal 60% is narrower and deeply lobed, while the apical 40% is wider and has shallow lobes or large teeth. The flowers are greenish-yellow catkins, produced in the spring. The acorns are very large, 2-5 cm (0.8-2 in) long and 2-4 cm (0.8-1.5 in) broad, with a large cup that wraps much of the way around the nut, with large overlapping scales and often a fringe at the edge of the cup." What do you see?

I think I saw an elephant's head and trunk at first, but now I see a man, with a very muscular arm being raised, leaning away from me with head down. After some recent snow, this patch had melted into a tiny piece of ice and I couldn't resist holding it up against the blue sky. Found on Saturday morning at Burnsmead, Fish Creek Park.
