Pastels

21 Dec 2008 164
Thought this would make a change from all the bright red, WARM images that I've been posting recently, though bright red would have been ideal for today. Walked for five and a half hours on the Bird Count in Canmore, Kananaskis, near Banff, in approximately -30C (-22F) temperatures. Frigid, to say the least : ). Saw only 17 species, as I think most of the birds were hiding from the cold.

Himalayan Blue Poppy

13 Dec 2008 243
This unbelievably gorgeous Himalayan Blue Poppy was growing at the Reader Rock Garden back in June. Definitely need some bright colour today - the weather is atrocious, as a major snow storm has blown in! I'm not stepping outside my front door for the next two days. To help me get through this, I gave into temptation and bought a large Stollen from Safeway (rather like a fruit bread with some almond paste in the centre - mmm,,,)

White Rose

28 Feb 2011 173
I guess it's a white Rose with a tinge of yellow : ) It's hard to even imagine a time when such beautiful flowers can grow. Today, here, it is -23C (-9F) with a windchill of -36C (-33F) with heavy snow! Think I'll stay home - yet again. Just noticed I took this photo two years ago.

Rattlesnake Plantain Orchid / Goodyera repens

22 Aug 2010 169
I'm not the best at identifying our various tiny, wild Orchid species, but I think I'm right in saying this is Goodyera repens. A macro shot to to show these tiny, hairy flowers. Seen at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park on 9th August.

Blue Lettuce / Lactuca tatarica

25 Aug 2010 138
This was one of the many plants we found in bloom on the floor of Horseshoe Canyon on Saturday. Several of us went north east of the city to the Badlands near Drumheller and spent the day botanizing Horseshoe Canyon. I very rarely see Blue Lettuce, but I love the small flowers.

Welcome spring

15 May 2010 126
I'm just not getting all that many photos worth doing anything with at the moment, so resorted to buying a small bunch of pink Tulips from Safeway the other day. : )

Summer colour

27 Jul 2009 194
Beautiful, bright flowers growing in a garden belonging to an elderly gentleman who has an outdoor cactus garden.

Blossom

09 Aug 2009 280
I took this photo on 23rd May last year (2008), but wasn't sure whether to post it or not. Now I'm feeling the need for some colours that are different from all the greens and yellows and beiges that have been in so many of my recent forest shots. This blossom tree was growing down south of us, at the Coaldale Bird of Prey Centre, near Lethbridge.

The WOW factor

28 Mar 2009 249
Happened to notice a small bunch of these vivid pink fringed Gerberas at Safeway yesterday. It was the only bunch and I was sure it had my name on it, LOL. Needless to say, I just HAD to buy them. Just enough natural light was coming through my window,

Sweet Peas

02 Jan 2009 143
After many recent, long days of being out in snow-covered "everything", I thought I'd post this image of delicate, pink Sweet Peas. It feels SO good to rest my eyes on something of a different colour - a lovely change from the whites and greys of winter days. These pretty flowers were growing in a large flower container at Bowness Park back in September. Did yet another (New Year's Day) Bird Count this morning in a local park. 20 species of bird were spotted by our small group of five people, including a juvenile Bald Eagle, White-winged Crossbills, and a Northern Goshawk. All much too far away for photos : ) A very enjoyable morning - though my body is going to remind me tomorrow morning of the various muscles I didn't know I had, LOL. Trudging through deep snow makes for a pretty good workout!

Facing the light

05 Dec 2008 137
One of the brilliant red Hibiscus flowers at the Calgary Zoo, that was growing in the Conservatory until fairly recently. Since then, the building has been demolished, ready for building a brand new Conservatory, which should be ready around fall 2009.

Frilled and pretty

13 Dec 2008 141
Posted on this bitterly cold day to add "warmth" and the reassurance that spring and summer WILL eventually replace these frigid days. Seen growing months ago at the Reader Rock Garden.

Go for the gold

08 Nov 2008 99
These beautiful, bright flowers were growing in a friend's garden late August. Perhaps I should have kept this photo to upload shortly, when more snow arrives : )

A Christmas glow

22 Nov 2008 117
I really realized how bright this photo of my Christmas cactus was when I accidentally hit a wrong key last night and ended up with this photo as my desktop image, LOL! I decided to keep it there and it helps give a (false) feeling of warmth as I sit here with cold draughts from my window gaps swirling around me : ). Not the sharpest of photos, but thought I'd post it anyway. By the way, Rebecca, thought of you when I saw how this photo turned out - RED for the birthday girl (well, for yesterday, but close enough).
