Asparagus flowers

02 May 2013 187
Sometimes, there is an uninspiring, poor quality photo that you want or need to add to a Set and the only way to get it in there is to upload it. This is one such image, lol. The flowers of the Asparagus plant are very tiny, and I'm not sure if they open any further than this or not. This macro shot was taken on 27 July 2011, at the Erlton/Roxborough Natural Area. No "need" (not that there ever is!) to comment. "The flowers are bell-shaped, greenish-white to yellowish, 4.5–6.5 mm (0.18–0.26 in) long, with six tepals partially fused together at the base; they are produced singly or in clusters of two or three in the junctions of the branchlets. It is usually dioecious, with male and female flowers on separate plants, but sometimes hermaphrodite flowers are found. The fruit is a small red berry 6–10 mm diameter, which is poisonous to humans." From Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Asparagus

Happy Easter weekend!

I've had this photo tucked away in one of my "Maybe post to Flickr" folders for a long time. When I looked in a couple of these folders yesterday, I was amazed at how many old photos I just never posted. A check of My Archives assured me that I had never posted this shot - so here it is, three years late : ) Makes a change from Owls, too, as I have quite a few of those to post in the upcoming days/weeks. Taken on 6 April 2010. "Narcissus is a genus of mainly hardy, mostly spring-flowering, bulbous perennials in the Amaryllis family, subfamily Amaryllidoideae. Various common names including daffodil, narcissus, and jonquil are used to describe all or some of the genus. They are native to meadows and woods in Europe, North Africa and West Asia, with a center of distribution in the Western Mediterranean." From Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissus_ (plant) Apologies to all my local friends - I finally washed my absolutely filthy vehicle this afternoon. Without fail when I do this, it either rains or snows. Just checked the weather for the coming week and guess what, snow is in the forecast, lol.

Three-leaved Solomon's-seal / Maianthemum trifoliu…

I've only ever seen this wildflower once - out at Elkton Bog, N or NW of Calgary, on 2 July 2009. Not my favourite kind of photo - cluttered - but I needed to upload it for a project. I believe it is Fairy Common in Alberta. Amazing how different the leaves are from those of the Star-flowered Solomon's-seal. We saw several new (to us) plants on that great day of botanizing, including one of my favourites, Sundew. I think it was on that trip that I was kneeling, with my elbows resting on the ground, in about 8" of water in order to photograph some of the plants, lol. If you only knew what we go through sometimes to get some of our images : ) www.minnesotawildflowers.info/flower/three-leaf-false-sol...

I thought these Star-flowered Solomon's Seal berries (unfortunately only two of them rather than the more usual three), looked beautiful surrounded by the dead, curled leaves. Love the texture of these berries. Photographed at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park on 9 September 2011.
