Snowshoe Hare in its winter coat

I couldn't believe my luck when I returned home one day (26 January 2012), after seeing the tiny Northern Saw-whet Owl in Carburn Park for the first time, plus seeing a beautiful White-tailed Buck nearby. When I pulled into my parking spot, there was this beautiful Snowshoe Hare (Lepus Americanus) sitting in the snow just a few steps from my place. As soon as I got out of my car and saw that it was still there, I dropped my backback on the ground and turned on my camera. This beautiful animal, wearing its white winter coat, just sat there till I had taken enough photos - unusual, as I find they tend to immediately take off in leaps and bounds. I guess it thought that, as long as it didn't move a hair, I wouldn't see it : )

LOL, when I opened my front door a few days ago, this is what faced me! Actually, this Jackrabbit's ears were flattened over his back and he might have been sleeping, but when he saw me, this is the expression I captured. Needless to say, within a few seconds he was scampering away over the grass.

My back garden is a total disaster, but one thing that does grow in it is a small cluster of Delphiniums. I just liked the way the petals glisten, and the mixture of colours on a single petal.
My little visitor

After a somewhat chilly two and a half hour walk in a local park this morning, I came home and knew I just had to go food shopping before the bitter weather rolls in for the next few days. The first snowflakes began to fall by the end of the walk and shortly afterwards, the heavy, blowing snow started. I glanced through a front window to see how much snow I was going to have to clear off my car and was delighted to see two of these Jack Rabbits hopping around outside my place. I dashed to get my camera and managed to get three or four quick shots. Not sure what the forecast now says for the weekend, but it was something like -27C (and around -40C with wind chill!). No nature walks for me - and my camera wouldn't like it, either : )

Happened to look out of an upstairs window and noticed two Jack Rabbits behind my fence. The one that left seemed a lot bigger than this one, which stayed in the shelter of a Spruce tree. To my untrained eye, this one is perhaps a young one? It quickly stretched out its hind legs and looked as if it didn't have a care in the world : )

This pink Peony is one of the few decent plants that grow in my back garden : ). Taken back in July 2005.

This colourful dragonfly visited my garden a few days ago. No dragonflies today, though, as it was cold and wet.
