Rustaq fort, Oman

19 Mar 2010 204
Rustaq (or Rostaq) was once the capital of Oman. Rustaq fort, built four centuries prior to the dawn of Islam in Oman, is an imposing structure built on three levels, containing separate houses, an armoury, a mosque and four towers. My photo was taken in 1977 - in more recent times, the fort has been renovated. I'm glad I had the chance to see it in its original condition, but renovations were necessary to keep it standing.

Flight of the Trumpeters

Went with a friend south and east of the city yesterday, to Frank Lake and then east to the Shepard area. The wind was terrible - strong and cold! Not a lot of birds in these locations, both of which are very popular with birders. We saw plenty of open water on the various sloughs/ponds, but a good many of the birds were Northern Shovelers. We saw quite a few Tundra and Trumpeter Swans, which is always a treat. These are Trumpeters in this photo. They are dazzling white when the sun shines on them.

The Three Gossips & Sheep Rock

Took this photo of Courthouse Towers on 31st July 1981 on a family holiday to Arches National Park, USA. It shows the Three Gossips and Sheep Rock. This bitterly cold, snowy weather we are having at the moment is making me reminisce about long ago holidays. Think I've only had maybe two holidays since then (anywhere), so I feel lucky to have memories to look back on.
