Cornell Lab of Ornithology Bird ID Cards

The American Crow was taken by yours truly and it is much appreciated that one of my images was used. This pack of ID cards arrived in my mailbox just yesterday. They are beautifully made - and would make a great gift for a child.
I took this quick shot last night and really should have thought a bit more carefully about it and turned over one of the cards to show the range map and information that is given for each bird.
“A set of 38 large, colorful photos and interesting facts about common North American birds helps build bird identification skills. Revised, updated, and expanded!" These cards are one of the BirdSleuth Resources – others include a BirdSleuth Science Process Discovery Poster, Scavenger Hunt Cards, Bird Bingo Cards, Pocket Naturalist®, and BirdSleuth Poster 6-pack. For use with kids from Kindergarten to Grade 11.
BirdSleuth Bird ID Cards help kids become experts on identifying common backyard birds. The front of each card is a beautiful, full-color 5x8 image while the back of the card describes the habitat, food preferences, and breeding biology of the bird, along with a range map, trivia questions, and cool facts.
Each one of the 38 full-color laminated cards provides information on one of the most common birds. They are a great way to teach bird identification: each child in a group can become an expert on a bird or an individual can quiz herself on the bird names. There are also fun and easy-to-play games suggested, as well as BirdSleuth trivia questions and cool facts on every card. The cards also come in our Most Wanted Birds kit.”

Perhaps a boring photo? I just loved the metallic finish to these colourful Bumper Cars/Dodge'ems. My daughter (visiting Calgary from Vancouver for a week) and I didn't actually go on any of the rides at the Stampede Grounds yesterday morning, but all my kids used to enjoy the Bumper Cars many years ago. So did I!
Hello, Smurfs

Couldn't resist posting a shot of this big blue and white Smurf. He was hanging in one of the Midway game stalls at the Stampede Grounds on Tuesday, waiting for someone to win a game and take him home with them, when my youngest daughter and I went down to the Grounds for a few hours. I used to love watching the Smurfs on TV when my kids were young (many, many years ago, ha!).
The Spectacled Duck - a new species

Spent a couple of hours this morning wandering round the Stampede Grounds with my daughter from Vancouver. The Calgary Stampede is known around the world - such a crazy time and very popular with tourists as well as local people. There is a huge Midway with many "rides" and game booths. These cute little ducks kept moving along a narrow waterway at one booth - no idea what the purpose of the game was, but they looked cute coming round the corner in the sunshine.
I was thinking of my 7-year-old grandson when I saw these, knowing that he will have to miss the Stampede this year. He has a second-degree burn all over the top half of his body (not the lower half, as far as I know yet). He and his parents have very fair skin and always take great caution when out in the sun. Now that school is out, my grandson is in daycare and unfortunately the worker(s) there used ordinary sunscreen (#8, I believe) instead of the very powerful sunscreen that had been given to them to use by my son and daughter-in-law!!!! Apparently, my grandson has blisters the size of golfballs, so I can only imagine what pain he is in. He's not allowed to go out of the house for the next three weeks, poor kid!
A bee up close

I'm looking forward to seeing what photos my daughter (who lives in Vancouver but is in Calgary for a week at the moment) eventually posts to flickr or sends me in a regular e-mail. We spent a couple of hours together yesterday morning wandering round the Stampede Grounds, soaking up the annual Calgary Stampede atmosphere. This is just a silly photo, of one of the "bumble bees" that are part of one of the Midway (amusement park) rides. For sure, I can't stay away from nature for long, LOL! Actually, I was also curious to see how sharp this image would be in original size - a stationary object taken in full sunlight, unlike most of my usual subjects.
