Gorgeous feathers

I always forget that the Tree Swallow has such beautiful feathers - usually when you see these birds, they are looking very sleek, showing off their iridescence. This one was all puffed up, showing the feather pattern more clearly. Seen on our recent provincial May Species Count SW and W of the city, on May 27th.

We don't get to see Evening Grosbeaks all that otten here, so it's always a thrill when we call in at Barb Castell's acreage during the annual, provincial May Species Count. A good variety of bird species come to her feeders, and it's all we can do to drag ourselves away to continue on our search, SW of the city.

This photo was used in the Costco Connection magazine, March 2013, Vol. 28, No. 3, page 53.)
Now THAT'S colour

Posted for interest, not quality, ha! I rarely see one of these beautiful Baltimore Orioles - usually only when I take part in the annual, provincial May Species Count. Barb Castell's property, SW of the city, is one of our stopping places and each year she has these amazing birds come to her feeders. Not easy to catch a photo or two, but I'm always happy to get any photo of these colourful birds.

Western Tanager

Taken at Votier's Flats in Fish Creek Park, when we were on the annual, provincial May Species Count on May 26th. Not as sharp as it should have been, but I rarely see a Western Tanager, so wanted to add the image to my Birds of Alberta set.
Keeping a watchful eye

Seven of us covered an area SW and W of the city for the annual, provincial May Species Count on May 27th. This is one of the 65 species we were very lucky to find that day. Managed to get a few quick shots out of the car window, but then we had to continue on our search. I'm just so thankful that the two drivers stopped briefly - I, of course, would have loved to stay there forever, lol.

One of the three Great Gray Owls that seven of us were lucky enough to see while doing the annual, provincial May Species Count outside the city on May 27th.
