Tiny Lemon Drops / Bisporella citrina

This tiny fungus looks not much more than a yellow smear on a rotting log in the forest, but is quite beautiful when seen in macro size. This is a common woodland cup fungus; the fruitbodies may occur in large numbers. The cups are smooth and saucer-shaped and grow to a maximum size of 3mm across. Just love the vibrant colour. Photographed on 1 September 2012 at Brown-Lowery Provincial Park. www.mushroomexpert.com/bisporella_citrina.html

Not the sharpest photo, but these are the tiniest things you can imagine : ) Usually, it looks like just a yellow smear on a log. You need a hand lens, or of course a macro lens (as in this photo), to see this attractive sac fungus. It has a maximum cap size of about three millimeters. I like their delightful name, Lemon Drops (Bisporella citrina). As always, my ID is tentative : ) Photographed on September 3rd at Bragg Creek Natural Area.

The only tiny, yellow fungus that I know of that looks like this is the delightfully named Lemon Drops (Bisporella citrina), but there could be others, so my ID is only tentative. You need a hand lens, or of course a macro lens (as in this photo), to see this attractive sac fungus. It has a maximum cap size of about three millimeters. I found this display on a rotting log in North Glenmore Park on 6th September.
