This native plant grows on sandy prairies, sunny slopes where there is dry soil. Flowers are solitary at the end of branches and there are 5 ray florets. In flower early July-September. Though common here, I don't see it all that often - and it is rather difficult to spot.

Not sure what kind of little bird this is, but it lives at the Calgary Zoo in the TransAlta Rain Forest building. Fun to watch this little vivid splash of colour darting from plant to plant : ) It is so hot and humid in this building and your camera lens fogs up badly and the light is very poor, so I'm amazed that this photo came out at all. I usually end up having to delete most photos that I take in there.
