The "important parts" of a beautiful Hibiscus flower, in the new Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo.
Pink Powder Puff

I was so happy to see this Pink Powder Puff shrub in the new Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo - I believe this is a dwarf one. The one they had in the old Conservatory was a much bigger shrub and the flowers were red, but maybe this small one will simply grow bigger?
Just got back home from a very quick trip to a local park - well, it was quick getting there, but, oh boy, I must have caught rush hour on the way home. Had great fun watching a Porcupine that was up in a Spruce tree, nibbling on the branches. A real treat!

Reminds me a little of the swirling skirt of a dancer. This Hibiscus was growing in the new Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. I'm so enjoying this beautiful pink while I'm living in a white world - it will definitely be a white Christmas this year, though perhaps a rather dirty white : )
Christmas bling

This strange ornament was in the new Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo. This huge room was full of Poinsettias, which you can see in the reflection. You can also see that several of these long rows of "fused" baubles radiate from a central spot. A peculiar shape, but creates interesting reflections. Hope your Christmas Day is going happily : )
An orchid for YOU

I met up with my youngest daughter, who has just moved back from Vancouver to take some training for a career change, at the Zoo the other day. We were really curious to check out the brand new Conservatory that was officially opened just a few days before. This is one of the gorgeous orchids that are growing from a tree in the huge entrance hall.
Today has been gloomy, with rain, sleet, and snow. And so, winter returns yet again! I do hope this is short-lived, but won't hold my breath : )
Bring on the heat

This was such a glorious Hibiscus flower, seen in the new Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo a few days ago. Hope it makes you feel a little warmer if you happen to see this image - gosh, it feels SO good to see some bright colour! Rachel - I'm waiting to see how your shots came out, LOL. Not the easiest flowers to reach, were they? : )
Yellow beauties

This is one of the species of Orchid that are growing from a tree in the main entrance hall at the Calgary Zoo's newly opened Conservatory. Rather spectacular, I thought. Wouldn't mind being in that warm, humid, tropical space today, instead of sitting at home, feeling the very cold air swirling around my ankles as I sit at my computer, LOL.
HOT red

I just HAD to post something that was vibrant, rich RED, to take my mind off how cold it is : ) It is -21C today with a windchill of -27C. It can get a lot colder than this - and I really don't want to think about THAT : ) This was one of the beautiful, shiny Anthuriums growing in the new Conservatory at the Calgary Zoo.
"Anthurium is a large genus of about 600- 800 (possibly 1,000) species, belonging to the arum family (Araceae). Anthurium can also be called "Flamingo Flower" or "Boy Flower", both referring to the structure of the spathe and spadix." From Wikipedia.
Just spent a good part of the afternoon copying four folders of nature images into a new folder, ready to burn to DVD. For some weird reason, it kept removing all my titles, leaving just the number of each photo, which is definitely not what I wanted. That's what I call a wasted afternoon : )
