Seashell spiral

12 Dec 2009 158
Needed to have thoughts of a lovely warm ocean this afternoon, after a very COLD two-hour + walk in a local park this morning. Thought this image felt warm and sunny, though the shell was photographed in my kitchen, LOL. It's around -28C (-18F) today, without windchill added. Five brave little Black-capped Chickadees were all we saw. All the other birds either had more sense that we had, or else they were up at the garden feeders in the gardens that edge the park. Since people are no longer allowed to feed the birds in the park, they are now being "pulled" out of their natural environment and are still being fed by human beings.

Tiny fringed tips

16 Dec 2009 1 170
These white, sparkling petals belonged to one of the small Chrysanthemum flowers that I bought a short while ago. The whole flower looks fringed and this is what I saw through my macro lens when focussed on a few petal tips. Not sure if bending my neck to take macro photos has irritated something in my neck, but I have had a painful neck and been feeling dizzy two whole days now, which is a real nuisance, especially this close to Christmas, LOL! Our deep-freeze broke today, thank goodness, though I wasn't able to go out and make the most of it.

Iron Pyrites striations

18 Dec 2009 142
These are two small cubes of Iron Pyrites, part of a larger specimen. The sides of some of the cubes are striated, which is kind of neat. Not sure what causes the surface to be grooved - did a very rapid search yesterday, but the one and only site I glanced at was so way above my head, I left it.

The innerworks of a Christmas Cactus

20 Dec 2009 159
Used my little Raynox 250 macro lens to get a closer look at the stamens and pollen of a Christmas Cactus flower. A warm glow, which feels good after walking all day today. Had a full day of Christmas Bird Count in the Canmore area (near Banff, in the Rocky Mountains) today. It's recommended that a person does 10,000 steps a day - well, I've done 23,377 today, LOL, and it feels like it, too! Feel exhausted, so won't be on Flickr much tonight. Got less than two hours sleep last night and tomorrow morning I have to be up early to go looking for Owls with a friend. Aren't I lucky?? No walking though, just driving.

Droplets on green

Still playing and having fun, LOL! The teeniest little water droplets : )

On a cold, snowy, windy day

04 Dec 2009 175
This is the tip of a tiny flower petal, taken through my Raynox 250 macro lens. Wasn't sure whether I would end up posting it or not, but today seems to be a good day to see a splash of brilliant, glowing colour. A good part of Alberta is in the midst of a nasty winter storm, that is creating chaos and havoc. I would have happily stayed at home all day, but desperately needed to go food shopping. Every time you stop somewhere, you end up having to clear your vehicle of snow yet again and it's so much fun when you've cleared the last car window, jumped into the vehicle and already the snow has recovered all the windows, LOL. Oh, well, weather like this calls for desperate measures - which today came in the form of buying take-out from a local Chinese Restaurant on my way home : ) My car is plugged in and I don't plan on going anywhere tomorrow and maybe not even Sunday. We are being warned not to go out on the roads unless it is absolutely necessary. Stay warm and SAFE, everyone!

Red for -27C

12 Dec 2009 141
I think I took nicer images this afternoon, but haven't had a chance to go through them properly yet. Meanwhile, here is a splash of hot red to hopefully help you feel a little warmer : ) These teeny droplets are on a very small, white flower petal. I needed this colour to contrast with the cold looking flower image above : )

Patterns and shapes

05 Nov 2009 171
Decided to post something that isn't a flower, a bird or a mushroom, LOL! I collected many species of shells many years ago and thought I would use my macro lens on one of them the other day. I've always been fascinated by shells that have a zig-zag pattern on them - can't for the life of me think of the word that is on the tip of my tongue that I wanted to use instead of "zig-zag" : ) Later: the zig-zag patterns remind me of seismographs : ) Think that's the right word.

A little pink universe

11 Nov 2009 146
Just a supermacro of the goings-on under a flower petal : ) Messing around with my Raynox 250 again. Sorry I'm being so slow with commenting, everyone! I've just been told that I have dangerously high blood pressure (after being without medication for quite a few months because I didn't have a family doctor, and the last walk-in doctor I saw almost a year ago refused to give me more than one month's worth and told me I HAD to find one - impossible in this city!!! Finally, I have managed to find a doctor (though I have to admit I can barely understand him, as his accent is very difficult. I wonder if his patients are leaving him because they can't understand him? Anyway, I am back on BP medication - a side effect is that it is causing awful tiredness, which does not go down well with me at all! Hard to make myself get out of bed and get ready to go on an occasional walk, too, which isn't good. I'm just functioning at a MUCH slower pace - grrr!
