Taking a break

02 Aug 2009 303
A friend pointed out (as he does so many times - lucky me!) this Momma Red Squirrel when we were botanizing the Threepoint Creek Natural Area (Sheep River Natural Area) on 30th July. He thought she looked really cute with her little front legs folded under her chin and her chin resting on them. As I approached a little nearer, she turned to look at me. I hope she was enjoying her short break away from the "kids". I felt a little guilty, disturbing her during those precious few moments to herself.

Bird's Nest fungus

31 Jul 2009 184
One of the highlights from our full day of botanizing the Sheep River Natural Area yesterday was seeing this cluster of tiny Bird's Nest fungi. These ones were different from others we had seen in the past and were more like shaggy little goblets. The "nest" at far left (touching the edge of the photo) shows a different stage. Sorry, I don't have an ID for this species.

Unidentified caterpillar

We saw this caterpillar yesterday, when a few of us went south of the city to botanize the Sheep River Natural Area for the day. I've just had a quick search on Google but have not yet been able to come up with an ID for this rather attractive caterpillar. It was nibbling away on a low Willow shrub.

Rattlesnake Fern

01 Aug 2009 183
This was the first time I had seen a Rattlesnake Fern - seen on 30th July at the Sheep River Natural Area, when we botanized the Threepoint Creek Natural Area. This photo shows an enlarged view of the small fruiting body. A stalk forms at the base of the frond on the fern stem. This stalk grows above the frond and bears bright yellow spore cases in stalked clusters that resemble grapes.

Spider carrying babies

I don't know what kind of Spider this is, but it was seen on the rocks by the edge of the creek when we botanized Threepoint Creek Natural Area (Sheep River Natural Area) on 30th July.
