Yesterday's beauty

16 Aug 2009 144
Yesterday, I was out of the house with two friends from 7:00 a.m. till 10:15 p.m., botanizing the Snakes Head Natural Area, north west of Calgary. There were hardly any fungi there, but luckily friend David spotted this beauty right near the beginning of our walk : ) This happily reduced my craving to see mushrooms all day, LOL. Then, on the way home, we walked and botanized a nature trail on the property of Dave and Bernie Amonson, near Water Valley. We had planned on calling in at a restaurant somewhere for supper, but were kindly invited to have barbecued hotdogs by Dave and Bernie instead. A very enjoyable day - it rained first thing and then on the way home, but we were very lucky that the rain kept away while we were walking.

Broken

Towards the end of our botanizing walk at the Bearberry Prairie Natural Area/Sundre Natural Area four days ago, friend Doug handed me this broken mushroom to photograph. Definitely past its prime, but I don't remember seeing a fungi like this one before : ) It had been growing in moss and grass. ID provided by Doug Waylett - thanks! Wooly Inky Cap, Coprinus lagopus.
