Camouflaged Wood Frog

04 Jul 2009 1 156
I only let out one shriek yesterday, deep in the forest northwest of the city, when a different Wood Frog surprised me. They always make me jump if I'm taken by surprise. It was quite difficult to notice this little guy, as he blended in very well with the leaf litter at the base of a tree. "Wood Frogs can survive many freeze/thaw events during winter if not more than about 65% of the total body water freezes." From Wikipedia.

Wild Sarsaparilla / Aralia nudicaulis

30 Sep 2011 139
This photo was taken way back on 2nd July 2009, at the Mountainview Sports and Handicapped Centre north of the city. I think I've only ever come across this plant two or three times, and it's not the easiest plant to photograph. Being posted for interest, not for photographic merit : ) "Sarsaparilla is a primary ingredient in old fashioned-style root beer, in conjunction with Sassafras, which was more widely available prior to studies of its potential health risks." From Wikipedia. Thanks, Papa Ellis! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aralia_nudicaulis

Bicknell's Geranium

01 May 2010 159
This is just a very small wildflower, and was seen growing at the Mountainview Sports and Handicapped Centre NW of the city, in July last year. "Bicknell's geraniums cover the ground within a year after intense fires, thus preventing soil erosion and holding onto nutrients that might otherwise leach out of the ecosystem. In effect, the plant is nature's bandage that helps the landscape begin the healing process after a major disturbance kills the forest." From www.dnr.state.mn.us/volunteer/mayjun08/mp.html

Colour in the forest

This beautifully coloured fungus was growing low down on a tree trunk at the Mountainview Sports and Handicapped Centre that we botanized two days ago. Thanks, Doug!

Oh, so cute

We found this little mushroom on 2nd July, when a handful of us went out to botanize the forest at the Mountainview Sports and Handicapped Centre, near Sundre, north of the city. I just love the pattern and shape of this little beauty : )
