Forget-me-not

A few Forget-me-nots from a hike along the Marston Creek Trail, W of Longview. I always like to see the tiny, pink buds of these flowers. Am late posting again this evening. Have been out on a trip all morning, seeing about 30 of the largest or most unusual tree species in the city. Straight afterwards, I was on a walk in Fish Creek Park all afternoon, ending with a lovely BBQ at a friend's house. Thanks so much, Dorothy and Stephen, for this delightful treat. A most enjoyable walk first and then a delicious meal to finish off the day!
Lichens from Marsden Creek, Kananaskis

Thinking of you, Doug! Found on 6th June 2010 on the Marsden Creek hike, Kananaskis. I'm pretty sure that Doug went on this hike. If only I could identify lichens, but unfortunately I don't know them. This display, growing on a rock, was quite beautiful.
Where I spent yesterday

Yesterday, a few of us were so lucky because a friend took us to an area west of Longview (south of Calgary), on the Kananaskis border - maybe an hour's drive from the city? He had found a plant that he thought was Balsamroot and wanted us to see it. I thought he meant that he had found just one small plant, but when we had climbed high, we discovered that part of the hillside was just brilliant yellow from all the clumps of this pretty plant. I hadn't expected the actual flower head to be as large as it was, which was a nice surprise. Not only did we all get to see this sight (and this was a new plant for me), but we also saw plants like Scorpionweed (another new plant for me), Jacob's ladder, Red-stemmed Saxifrage and other beautiful plants. The scenery was gorgeous with quite a few Limber Pines, the weather was sunny and warm, and the company of a few friends was as precious as always : ) And today, my knees and thighs KILL!!!

I hadn't expected the actual flower head to be as large as it was, which was a nice surprise (heads are 5-12 cm across). I should also add that the bracts are lance-shaped and covered with white, woolly hairs, borne in 2-4 rows. Not only did we all get to see this sight (and this was a new plant for me), but we also saw plants like Scorpionweed (another new plant for me), Jacob's ladder, Red-stemmed Saxifrage and other beautiful plants. Thanks, David, for yesterday's treat! Apparently, this is the most northerly location recorded for this species.

Does anyone happen to know what this wildflower is? I haven't been able to ID it yet. We saw it in southern Alberta, south of Calgary and west of Longview, on the border of Kananaskis, three days ago. This is a zoomed in photo. Later: many thanks to aspidoscelis for the ID and to Stephen for his confirmation. Much appreciated!

This bright orange Lichen is one of my favourite kinds and this patch was growing on a rather nice, dark brown, boulder. Seen on a hike south of Calgary, west of Longview, on the Kananaskis border.

This was a new plant for me, seen on a most enjoyable day a week ago, out on the border of Kananaskis, west of Longview. I love to see plants blooming amongst the rocks - though it was pure agony to kneel on this sharp ground surface.
