Looking towards Weaselhead

03 Apr 2010 205
This is part of one of the main parks in the city. I was standing at the top of the cliff in North Glenmore Park, looking over the delta towards the green, metal bridge that goes from right to left into Weaselhead (the treed area that you see in this photo). This image is zoomed, so the Rocky Mountains look closer than they really are. Aren't we lucky to live in such a beautiful place? Was out in Fish Creek Park all morning - checked on the nesting Great Horned Owl, but we couldn't see any sign off little white balls of fluff yet. It was another gorgeous day - wonderful, after six months of snow and ice! As soon as I'm ready, I'm heading for the nearest backroads in search of (hopefully) a Mountain Bluebird : )

With open arms

This green Chrysanthemum flower was a particularly beautiful one in a small, mixed bunch I bought a few weeks ago. Maybe 3" across and very "open". I don't often see green flowers.

Centre ... or Scenter

A Rose from Safeway, bought last month when our weather was bitterly cold and snowy.

Butterfly magic

27 Apr 2010 175
This beautiful butterfly (at the Calgary Zoo) happened to land right on the tip of this long leaf, so I was lucky to get an uncluttered background. I was there again this afternoon, feeling like I was in a sauna, and was thrilled to bits to see a few butterflies that I hadn't seen on previous visits. Our weather forecast is depressing for the next few days, so thought I'd better go while there was at least a bit of sun. The new Enmax Conservatory is such a great place to go when you are feeling photography withdrawal symptoms after too many walks where everything is way, way in the distance. You can click away to your heart's content : )

Another little world

A little water droplet on the petal of a miniature Daffodil, taken maybe an hour and a half ago in my kitchen. I can see my two cacti upside down at the bottom of the droplet, each with a small orange flower.

One of a kind

Thought this little mushroom was a bit different - love the unusual pattern on its cap. Seen growing along the Fullerton Loop trail in Kananaskis on 29th August.

Splash of colour

Yay, the Flamingos are in their outside area at the Calgary Zoo now that the weather is warming up. Can never resist taking yet another shot of these birds with their amazing colours.

Yellow Prairie Violet

LOL, I think I surprised even myself when this photo loaded - pretty sharp, unlike some of my photos : ) We saw several of these wildflowers at 12 Mile Coulee a few days ago. We don't see many of these plants in the city, so it's always a pleasure when they are found. Flowers are 10-15 mm across, growing April-early June.

Tiramisu - Happy Easter, everyone!

10 Apr 2009 158
This was the most delious Italian dessert - and chocolate is perfect for around Easter : ) I must admit that the reason I bought this was that I was desperate for something different to photograph, LOL. This was the prettiest thing I could find that was TINY (i.e. about 3" across). Don't need the calories, period, but most definitely don't need the calories from some regular sized dessert : ) I do have to admit one thing, though - I did buy a 3" cheese cake (like one in a photo I posted ages ago), just so that I wouldn't be tempted to eat this Tiramisu before I photographed it and then wait and check that one of the photos was sharp enough. Oh, by the way, this was bought from Safeway!! "Tiramisu has become one of the most popular desserts served in restaurants of all types, not just Italian restaurants. The recipe has been adapted into cakes, puddings, and other varieties of dessert. Tiramisu is made by soaking savoiardi biscuits in espresso with the optional addition of liquor and sugar, and layering them with a mixture of mascarpone cheese and zabaglione, a light custard made with Marsala wine or a liqueur. Cocoa powder is sprinkled on top of the dessert, which is refrigerated before being served." From Wikipedia.

Laurel-leaved Willow catkin

Another shot of the Laurel-leaved Willow catkin, showing better the bright red branch. They really are very attractive : )

Flight of the Trumpeters

14 Apr 2009 1 288
Went with a friend south and east of the city yesterday, to Frank Lake and then east to the Shepard area. The wind was terrible - strong and cold! Not a lot of birds in these locations, both of which are very popular with birders. We saw plenty of open water on the various sloughs/ponds, but a good many of the birds were Northern Shovelers. We saw quite a few Tundra and Trumpeter Swans, which is always a treat. These are Trumpeters in this photo. They are dazzling white when the sun shines on them.

Here comes the sun ... I wish!

Today has been grey, cold, very windy and with a bit of snow thrown in this morning! So, I thought a sunny flower might help.
