Baby Burrowing Owl

25 Mar 2009 263
Not a good quality photo, as it was taken indoors. When a friend and I went down to the Coaldale Bird of Prey Centre in the summer of 2007, this little guy and two (?) others were in an open crate inside the Visitor Centre. They were about one month old. Interesting that their eyes are white, but they will become yellow when they become adults. One of the workers there lifted them out and on to the floor, where they "explored" their freedom, including pecking on my shoe, LOL. Just adorable little things. Later in the day, I had an adult Burrowing Owl sitting on my arm : )

Short-eared Owl

A Short-eared Owl seen at the Coaldale Bird of Prey Centre, near Lethbridge, on 23rd May. An occasional report is coming in at the moment of a Short-eared Owl(s) being seen in the wild, east of the city.

Watchful eye

Yes, I have been posting SO many photos of mushrooms recently, that I thought everyone needed a quick break with a bird image instead, LOL. Sorry, Machel : ) This little Burrowing Owl was at the Coaldale Bird of Prey Centre, near Lethbridge, southern Alberta. It's a wonderful centre that takes in injured birds of prey and releases the ones that can be released and trains those that are too severely injured to survive back in the wiild. Another long day of botanizing today - was out of the house from 7:30 a.m. till about 6:00 p.m. A handful of us spent the day covering the Fullerton Loop that begins from Allan Bill Pond, off Elbow Falls Trail. All that exercise and sun has me feeling as if I could fall asleep any moment soon. Can't wait to post an amazing mushroom we saw - maybe tomorrow.

Golden Eagle

The Golden Eagle really has amazing feather detail. This beautiful raptor was seen at the Coaldale Bird of Prey Centre, near Lethbridge, southern Alberta, a week ago. I was there with a bunch of friends again today - and again, the weather was great. This time, I had the chance to have a Barn Owl on my (gloved) hand, as well as the tiny Burrowing Owl. Also got some better (but still rather distant) photos of a gorgeous Western Tanager flying around the grounds there.

American Kestrel

Enough wind to ruffle the pretty feathers of this male American Kestrel. Seen at the Coaldale Bird of Prey Centre, near Lethbridge, southern Alberta. I only ever see these birds perched at a great distance in the wild, so I enjoyed seeing them up close on this visit, to see what they really look like. Very attractive, small birds of prey.

Weight of the world

Sorry, Rebecca, this owl lives at the Coaldale Bird of Prey Centre, just over a two-hour drive south from here (i.e towards the US border). I went there for the day with a friend in July 2007 and we had the most amazing time (despite a temperature of either 36C or 38C all day). This Centre takes injured birds of prey and releases those that eventually recover. The rest do such a great job of educating people about owls, hawks and eagles. We don't get Barn Owls in Alberta. I had the humbling opportunity to have both a Burrowing Owl and a Great Horned Owl separately on my arm : )
