This was just a small flower that was on a stem with a few others - bought from Safeway, as usual : ) I needed to see colour today, as our world has become rather white after it snowed all morning. They said on TV early this morning that the roads were dreadful, with cars sliding down hilly streets into each other. I think one pile-up had eight cars involved. My plan had been to go out in search of birds, but I changed my mind and have stayed home all day. I am NOT ready for winter! Supposed to be 21C on Saturday - did anyone say that Calgary has crazy weather, LOL? More problems with Flickr ....sigh!

Today, after three days of avoiding going out in the -27 to -29C temperatures (wind chill temperature around -40C), I braved the cold and went for a much-needed walk. It had soared to a balmy -12C (wind chill -18C) and the sun came out occasionally. Really a beautiful day today, other than being rather chilly. I started walking east from Bebo Grove in Fish Creek Park and soon came across this huge Pileated Woodpecker pecking away at a tree trunk. After a while, it suddenly flew at me, just a few inches above my head, and landed in this bush, where it ate a few berries for a snack. I don't remember ever seeing a Pileated eating berries before, so it was interesting to watch as it very awkwardly swung upside down, right way up, half lying down ....
