Bee on Yellow Sweetclover

11 Sep 2008 136
One of these days, I will find out the proper name for these orange striped bees - meanwhile, I think of them as orange-bummed bees, LOL. Quite attractive insects. This one is clinging on to a stem of Yellow Sweetclover, down near the canal by the Max Bell Arena.

What is this?

This old piece of machinery has been made into a sculpture in a park fairly near the Max Bell Arena in Calgary. So far, we have not been able to find out what this ued to be a part of. If anyone has any information, it would be much appreciated - thanks!

A city perch

This Swainson's Hawk was flying in circles overhead as we walked in a new (for me) area a couple of days ago, close to the Max Bell Arena. It did land, but chose a perhaps photogenic, but not natural, perch : ). Could this be an immature Swainson's?

Viburnum lantana

We found this Viburnum lantana shrub covered in berries, and growing wild in a natural area near the Max Bell Arena. The berries are such a beautiful colour and very shiny. "Has dense branching, masses of white flowers. Very attractive fruit that changes from scarlet red to black in August-September." Maybe I should have posted my photo that shows some berries that have already turned black.
