Downy Woodpecker

26 Jan 2008 143
After my disappointing drive across the city to Bowness Park around midday, and discovering that the beautiful hoarfrost had vanished in that part of the city, I called in at Burnsmead, Fish Creek Park. Here, I got a chance to take a few shots of Chickadees, Nuthatch and this little male Downy Woodpecker. I always appreciate that little bright patch of red!

Happy Birthday wishes for my son, who is the oldest of my three grown "children". I still think of him as my little "man of the jungle", as he was born in Brunei, Borneo MANY years ago! I won't say how old he is today - that would be much too depressing to think about, LOL!

Winter coating

When I woke up this morning and peered through my blinds, a winter wonderland greeted me. The trees were covered in a white hoarfrost and the sky was deep blue. As soon as I could, just before noon, I drove across the city to Bowness Park, as I thought it would be an amazing sight. Well, by the time I got there, there was really no frosting left in that part of the city. On my way home, I called in at a couple of other park areas and managed to capture a tiny taste of the earlier beauty, including this Crested Wheatgrass covered in ice crystals.

Amaryllis

One of the gorgeous, huge Amaryllis flowers that are blooming in the Butterfly House at the Calgary Zoo. I stand in awe each time I see that room. It is a mass of brilliant spring colours. An absolute joy on a cold winter's day. Judging by the weather forecast, it sounds as if another Zoo visit will be in order next week - down to -23C!
