Spring - hurry up and arrive!

03 Feb 2008 117
This is what we saw and felt this morning, on a walk along the Bow River, from Carburn Park to Beaverdam Flats. The weather was -15C to -9C( windchill was -25C at start). The cold mist was rising from the river's surface and the ducks and geese lay huddled together - probably partly to keep each other warmer, but also to keep safer from a Bald Eagle attack! We saw 12 of these magnificent Birds of Prey in this stretch of the river. Towards the end of our walk, we walked under a tree in which was perched an immature Bald Eagle, devouring some unlucky duck. Too many branches to get a decent photo, not to mention having an index finger that was completely numb from the cold and could barely press the shutter button. Thanks for the following list, Tony! Birds seen this morning, in case anyone is interested: Canada Goose 5000 Mallard 5000 Redhead 3 Harlequin Duck 4 Bufflehead 125 Common Goldeneye 1000 Barrow`s Goldeneye 7 Hooded Merganser 1 Common Merganser 30 Bald Eagle 12 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Falcon Sp.1(Merlin/Prairie) Rock Pigeon 40 Downy Woodpecker 2 Northern Flicker 6 Pileated Woodpecker 1 Common Raven 95 Black-billed Magpie 15 Black-capped Chickadee 25 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 European Starling 2 Common Redpoll 6 House Sparrow 20
