Elk, Elk and more Elk

22 Jan 2013 237
On the way back to Calgary after a birding day in the Sibbald, Harvie Heights and Exshaw areas of Kananaaskis on Sunday, 20 January 2013, we noticed this very distant herd of Elk crossing a field. Just before this photo, they had been walking in a dead straight line.

Little cutie with BIG ears

This is one of the young Mule Deer from the group at the Calgary Zoo. Really very cute, and it actually stood still long enough for me to take a few photos. They are living outdoors in a large area that looks very similar to the natural areas where we see them in the wild. Though I would much rather see and photograph deer in the wild, I couldn't resist the temptation to capture this little guy/gal. Even cuter, I think, in the large size : )

Portrait of a Giraffe

This is one of the adult Giraffes at the Calgary Zoo. In a separate area, I could see the recent additon to this Giraffe family, a beautiful "little" daughter born to Mom, Carrie, on 29th July 2008. Zoo officials say that "Giraffes are not considered endangered but have been identified as a species whose population is in decline due to hunting".

Chipmunk

A cropped, but still distant, photo of a tiny Chipmunk, taken this morning. It was racing from rock to rock along the edge of the Glenmore Reservoir. Couldn't help but think of a camera with a lovely 18x zoom! Decisions, decisions.... Temptations, temptations....
