Purple Loosestrife

I have only seen this non-native, invasive plant a few times. A pity that it is an unwanted plant, as it is a beautiful colour. In Alberta, Purple Loosestrife is the only species of Loosestrife found - there are over 500 species of Loosestrife worldwide. It spreads rapidly and prevents native wetland species from growing. Throughout most of North America, it is designated as a noxious weed. Photographed at Pearce Estate on 9 September 2007.

There are more than 500 species worldwide in the Loosestrife family. This plant was growing among the bushes at Pearce Estate, where the light was not very good. Pretty though it is, this plant spreads rapidly and prevents native plants from growing. In most of North America, it is known as a noxious weed.
