Scarlet Butterfly Weed / Gaura coccinea

19 Aug 2010 158
This macro shows a single flower from a spike of several small flowers belonging to a Scarlet Butterfly Weed plant. There are four spoon-shaped petals which are white to yellowish and these may turn pink with age, sometimes a very deep pink/scarlet. Photographed yesterday afternoon at Erlton/Roxborough Natural Area, on my way home after a volunteer shift. This is perhaps the richest area in the city for wildflower species. Unfortunately, it is being seriously overtaken by invasive weeds, like Goat's-beard. Another weed doing a lot of damage there is Baby's-breath, which probably started when someone tossed an old vaseful of flowers over the fence from the cemetery that backs on to the natural area. Apologies for replacing this image later - seemed strange that there was only one comment in 7 hours (same as with another photo posted this morning). I wondered if maybe my photos weren't showing up? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaura_coccinea

Quite a pretty wildflower, seen almost a year ago now. At least all our snow that is falling today will provide some much-needed moisture.

We saw this Scarlet Butterfly Weed at Confluence Park yesterday. The species name "coccinea" means "scarlet", hence the common name of this wildflower. The flowers are white when they first open and turn scarlet red as they age.
